How to tell what turbo you have ?

Featured Replies

My car (BLT VRS) had a new turbo earlier this year, and the turbo noise is quite different, deeper than the previous turbo. A thread on here today has made me wonder the following.....

This might just be how mine sounded before it was replaced but I was wondering (hoping) that they might have changed it for a Garret rather than a KKK.

So, I think that the turbo is at the back of the engine near the manifold and bulkhead but not sure where I need to look to work out the type ?

Happy to post a pic of the engine bay (without cover)if needed if someone can point me in the right direction.

Daft question I'm sure, but I took the engine cover off and wasnt entirely sure where to look. :o

Thanks in advance

have a look at it... the garret has the name embossed in the material.... (its round the back.. between engine and bulkhead....

All Fabia diesels are fitted with KKK turbos.

All Fabia diesels are fitted with KKK turbos.

I had a Garret as standard. ASZ though.

I had my turbo replaced earlier this year and as I was picking it from the dealers up the mechanic that had done the work came to talk to me. I asked him which type he had replaced it with and he said it was a Garret but i had had a KKK on before though.

Thanks chaps, I'll have a closer look this evening for the embossed name near the bulkhead (ta sharkrider).

I am assuming it is likely to be a KKK from what lummox has said, and that the 'tone' change is just because the old one was on the way out (hence why the garage replaced it ?). I wouldnt have noticed a gradual change in noise over the 3 years I've had it. Still, Bigw's post has provided renewed optimism that they might have run out of KKK turbos.

Actually I don't know enough to know whether Garret is better, as I presume more KKK turbos fitted so more KKK turbos failed (I think this point was made in another thread a while ago) but this does appear to be one of the few weak points on the car (3 years, 50K not mapped and turbo knackered). I'm not too fussed either way, I was just putting together an advert for the car and figured it would be good information to pass on.

But I will check this evenin.

RBW.

Mine was a early asz and i had a kkk on it. Also, mine sounds higher pitched compared to my mates blt, so erm, dont really know, maybe jus the engine?

If there have been a few kkk's failing recently, then maybe there was a faulty batch fitted.
