40k service quote and brakes!

Featured Replies

Hi

I am due a 4 year, 40k service (have it on annual servicing)

I have been quoted £274 service

£275 for timing belt which needs done at 4 yr intervals

i also need new brakes and pads on front which are £265, and when i add in MOT at £54

This totals ..:censored:... .....£ 868

Is this a decent quote as it seems a bit pricey to me! Its at a dealer.

Also, should the water pump be done at the same time??

Any thoughts appreciated.

I paid less than that, ~£200 IIRC inc Darling's Dosh, at Henry's for a 40_000 on an Octy 1 last October, timing belt due Oct coming (was done on about 55_000 before I bought the car), and when I had front discs and pads (280mm vented discs, FSIII pads) it was ~£130 parts plus an hour's labour, maybe £190 inc at Henry's rate.

mine was similar for my Fabia though

~£320 for my 40k service and cambelt change

~£380 for new discs and pads all round (including a 312 upgrade to the front)

~£45 MOT

Seems a lot, just bad timing that it all comes together I suppose

Cambelt and water pump cost me £350 1 year ago, was advised on last service that my discs need doing when the pads wear down, but that was in October last year, and still not been done

(Pads still have loads of wear yet....)

So do you really need it all done together?

Can't you just get the bits from a motor factor and supply them to the garage?

Ring round for quotes on the parts alone and see what the difference is

thought about splitting it up, but the brakes were recommended as needing done at the kast service, ie a year ago!

ps the car onlyhas 35k, although the timing belt is for 40k or 4 years, could it wait till its 5th birthday which would be about 45k miles??

I had mine done at 6 years, and there were 70'000 on it (mainly because after 3 years we go away from main dealers and to indie mechanics, who wern't aware of the schedule change, until I found the info on here and thought, oops....)

Have always taken cam belt work to main dealer

Skoda mechanic said I was very lucky, the belt was still ok, but the water pump was in a hell of a mess

Dont think I would take that risk again.......
