Oh dear, interior lights are out...............

Featured Replies

Well, so far my 55 plate Superb 2.5 TDi has given me 42k trouble free miles. I have kept an eye out for water ingress all the time I've owned it etc... as discussed here and all seems well but.............

Working- 2x Red LEDS on front courtesy light cluster, rear cabin courtesy lights, front door interior opening lever illumination.

Not working- Boot interior light, glove box light, front door puddle lights, front interior light cluster and 2x front map reading lights.

As I say, all seems well from a water ingress point of view, am I lucky and it's a fuse that has blown?

Well, it isn't the fuse :(

Hi there, seems someone else is having electrical gremlins.

Its most definately water ingress by the sounds of it i am afraid to say. Not much can be done to prevent it totally.

You want to lift the passanger front carpet in a right hand drive car.

The electrics you are looking for is a large RED/BLACK clump of wires. Should be about 11 in totall this is where the problem is. They are connected inside a rubber gromit thing. I am sure that if you remove this rubber thing you will find that the wires are rusted or rotten straight through.

The clump is where the wires from the front and rear meet and go into the black box of tricks. Just strip back all the red/black wires. Make sure you cut teh rotten corroded bits off and are left with nice new wire. Then tie them all back together and seal them up with insulating tape or a clean rubber gromit. Then tape the wiring as much as you can. Especially around the connection area and the lump of wires that sit on the floor just before the black box. Ensure these are water tight.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Paul. And I really kept my eye on the water ingress issue too, I didn't spot a drop anywhere.

Hmmm, I'm not up to doing that much of a repair, I'll get it done in September when I get the cambelt done I think. Cheers.

Hi, its no problem at all. It is a very small job to do. Should take about 30 minutes max. If you take it to your Skoda dealer they will charge you several hundred pounds to fix it and its really as simple as cutting back a few wires and reconnecting them.

You will only need to do the RED/BLACK wires. You could tidy up a few other wires if they need done while you are there. You do not need to use connectors like in the website. You can simply tie the wires together and seal with insulating tape.

I would defo do it yourself though. Skoda will charge £48 just to plug it into a computer. if not more. Then they will charge you for an hours labour at £48 or maybe more than £48. All in all I reckon it will cost a good part of £200 for a 30 minute easy D.I.Y job.

If you are getting the timing belt done you might want to look at buying the parts yourself and getting a local garage to do the work for you. Or get a local garage to order the parts at trade prices and fit them as it will be hundreds cheaper than Skoda.

Cheers Paul. I'll look in the morning then thanks. I'm looking for a good indy to do the cambelt/water pump etc job... for me in the north west. Awesome in Irlam seem to get a good reputation in here, but I don't know them myself, yet.

Well, I've just looked and there is no deterioration at all to the wiring and the floor area is completely dry. I have made sure all plugs/sockets joins are secure. No difference. As a double check I have just looked at the bulb in the boot and checked for voltage at the wiring terminals, no voltage is present. I'm afraid I might have gone as far as I can go now with this, I haven't a clue what to do now :(

You're absolutely right - I just paid £391 to have the wiring sorted, - with the benefit of what I've just read here, I wish I'd done it myself!

Just discovered that I have rear puddle lights also not functioning and the vanity mirror lights aren't working either. Oh dear me

At this rate I'm actually now surprised that the rear cabin courtesy lights are actually working.

Possibly there is something still wrong under the carpet, but it isn't obvious and there's definitely no sign of water ever been in there, it all looks like new under the carpet.

Well, carpet up again this morning, anything with red/black wire scrutinised closely, any plugs unplugged, inspected and re-plugged. Control module scrutinised again, no issues, no water, no visible damage. Even pulled all the light fittings open and not single bulb is gone.

So, I'm afraid it looks like either an invisibly broken wire or a partial failure of the control module. Neither of which I can fix. Ho hum. At least the car runs OK

HI, I am having exactly same problems, only rear indoor lights work, found lots of water......have kept carpet open overnight and stuffed lots of newspaper to soak the water.CCM module is dry, no rust or corrosion........will dry using the hair dryer and start checking wires.............very helpful post though

Sadly, I still have the issues with the lights, but no sign of water ingress. I guess I have a hard to find wiring fault.
