Connecting iPod to Bolero

Featured Replies

Am I correct in thinking that if you connect your iPod to the Bolero stereo using the optional Mobile Device Interface (MDI), you get full iPod functionality through the Bolero touch screen. For example, selecting artist or album rather than just the 6 playlists which you get on the stream stereo.

Correct, you get full control as if you are using the Ipod itself.

Result, that's going on the list then. Thanks for the quick reply.

Can this device be retro-fitted to a Bolero head unit?

Cheers

I would like to know this aswell.

I believe it can be retrofitted, it certainly can be to the columbus but the MDI interface itself aint cheap.

Anyone know how much the MDI is ? Still waiting on my OEM Bluetooth kit, so I might as well get this first.

+1 I would have liked to have ordered it with the car but it would have meant waiting 3 months for the car rather than 2 weeks

Does anyone know if you can use a portable hd with the mdi usb input?

Hi Mannyo

thats great news but when I posed this question to skoda uk they were very non committal, saying that, they did take two days to find out and also told me that the SD slot could only deal with 512 mb cards. Have you tried it? I do have an ipod but would prefer to leave a £40 laptop drive in the car rather than £160 ipod (and not have to buy another adaptor for £25)!

I dont have the MDI sadly, but the bolero will accept upto 16GB SDHC cards with no problem.

Mannyo, whilst the Bolero system may take a 16SDHC card, the problem is the pure number of digital music formats, such as Mp3, Mp4, AAC, WAV & so on, if like me you have the majority of your tracks in Protected AAC format where I've bought music via Itunes, then you're a bit stuffed as it won't play it!

Sorry to say, but it's your fault for buying music in a protected format :)

Your anger should be directed at Apple, instead of Skoda. The Bolero can handle MP3 and WMA files. Personally I'd want to it be able to work with FLAC and OGG as well, but that's asking a bit much.

I avoid iTunes Music Store like the plague, and the protection is one of the reasons. Check out PodPlus though - that might just do the trick for you. Allowing you to 'backup' your iPod to MP3 files.

Just for your information guys the Handbook for my Bolero radio says it will except SDHC cards up to 32GB.

I'm transferring my CDs to an SD card . This plugs into the Bolero. Much cheaper (£3 for 2Gb) than an iPod and I can see the artist, album and track name. Got 30CDs on to one card.

A 16Gb card at sub £20 would be better value IMO, and save you ever having to swap cards if you've compressed the music to that extent :)

Steve

Bolero uses only SD cards. 2Gb seems to be the maximum available. SDHC cards do not work.

Erm, yes they do I'm afraid. Because there's a 16Gb SDHC in mine right now :)

Same here, listened to music off my 16GB SHDC on the way to work this morning.

Whats the difference between the cards are they a different size is the shdc smaller in size than a SD one

Physically, SD and SDHC cards are the same. The HC stands for 'High Capacity', so that obviously allows for larger sizes (upto 32Gb currently). But obviously you need the correct hardware to support them. The Bolero supports SDHC, the Columbus does not. So the maximum on your new toy is 2Gb :)

HTH,

Yipee a whole month of engelbert humperdink:rofl::rofl:

How many songs does that equate to on the 2 gig one then??????

Depends how much compression is on each music file, and how long each track is :)

How long's a piece of string.... ;)

Very roughly - an MP3 encoded a pretty poor 128kbps, equates to 1Mb per minute. I personally tend to only use files at 192 or higher (which therefore take up more room).
