steering wheel change - airbag

Featured Replies

Hey guys, ive got to get the steering wheel off my felly fun, what do i do about the airbag?

Is there one of these funny rotatable joints that keep a connection when rotated?

If i pull it all off and put it back together after, will the airbag light be on and need resetting?

Cheers for any help

Sorry other question, its not going to be some stupid type of fastener holding the wheel on is it? I just dont want to get halfway through the job to find its something i havent got.

My toolchest is pretty stocked but you know what its like, yourll have absolutely everything BUT the one socket you need.

I took the steering wheel off my Felicia recently, should be the same process with your Fun:

. Disconnect battery negative lead and wait 2 minutes

. Loosen 2 screws at back of steering wheel for airbag (allen key)

. Lift out airbag unit and unclip the connector

. Remove lower shroud for steering column (1 screw and then slide downwards)

. Mark a line going from steering wheel to column to get position correct when re-fitting (I used tipp-ex)

. Undo nut for steering wheel with socket and pull off steering wheel (also need to unplug another connector below)

Do the reverse for re-fitting, leaving the battery reconnection till last, and the airbag light will be fine

The wire for the airbag is all contained within a round black bit attached to the steering wheel so there won't be any problems there.

As long as you don't switch the ignition on while the airbag is disconnected then you won't need to reset the airbag light.

cheers guys, i changed it last night. I was trying to be as far away as possible when i reconnected the wires haha... just in case ;)

Thanks again

No more 'orrible yellow steering wheel

I have taken the airbag off countless times and I've never really worried about setting it off as I don't even think there is power to the controller etc when the ignition is off and just yank the connector straight off and plug it in without thinking about it.

Glad you got it sorted though... they are nice wheels but it looks awful when the yellow starts to rub off!

yeah must say it did "feel" alot nicer than the std felicia one. But like you say, when the yellow is coming off it looks vile.

I stopped at a chaps last night near me and had a look at his, the steering wheels gone brown..yuck yuck.

I have a black leather steering wheel and even that's gone all minging but at least you can't really see it like you can on the bright yellow wheel!

What wheel have you changed it for? A standard felly one?

yeah got a cheap one off ebay - 10 bob.

Replacing the entire interior with a standard felly one. I was going to put the bucket seats in it, but have decided the ones i have would look a bit chav, so ive bunged em on ebay last night. item no. 280368991846 incase you want them

Unfortunately ill have to keep all the original stuff in the loft for when its time to sell it.

I was surprised how easy it was to change the steering wheel though. Ive never really worked on cars before, only motorbikes. I was expecting some sort of stupid castleated nut or something or other, pleasantly surprised it only took 10 mins :)

Cool... might do the same as when my hands are damp I get a load of black rubbish rubbing off all over when I touch the wheel!

pleasantly surprised it only took 10 mins :)

10 mins! You're slacking! :D

It must only take me about a 2 minutes to get it off now!

It was more the "aaarrgghh im a bit scared its going to explode in my face" that slowed me down :rotz:

Im such a dissapointment.

Im not so scared now, so you watch it go off next time when im not so careful! :P

If you hear of a cheap interior going give me a shout! :)

Why swop the steering wheel? when under the leather there is a brand new standard wheel. Just cut the stitching and remove the leather

Really!?? If this is true I will do this!

I wouldnt do that to mine, ive seen funs being sold on ebay and people have thrown a right **** if all the original stuff isnt fitted to the car. It seems to be better to have old worn original stuff on than "non yellow"

For the sake of £10 and a few minutes keeping the original wheel might be worth it.
