Yellow Liquid at Battery Poles

Featured Replies

Hi,

today I had to take off the lid above the battery and saw that there is yellow liquid around both of the battery poles, which def. wasn't there a few weeks ago. It's a 05 Superb 1.9 TDi.

Any idea what it might be? Should I swap the battery?

Regards,

dsab

I would, Skoda recommend a new battery every 4 years anyway.

It's probably corrosion, diluted with a bit of the recent rain. Clean off the terminals thoroughly and apply vaseline (not grease). To do a proper job, you would need to lift both terminals - use a slave battery to avoid all sorts of setting up problems afterwards.

The OE VAG batteries are of reasonable quality - I would expect to get at least 6 years from the Varta unit fitted. "Every 4 years" sounds like the cambelt scam...

rotodiesel.

I agree, clean the terminals and cover them with a film of Vaseline. there is no reason at all why a decent battery (and Varta are one of the better makes) cannot go on much longer than 4 years if it is looked after properly (terminals kept corrosion free, not leaving the car in freezing conditions, or too hot etc).

The battery on SHMBO's old Fiesta Ghia X (that had always been garaged from new) lasted for 11 years!

I was going to take the battery out of my 2.5 TDi this weekend. What's the issues with simply disconnecting and reconnecting the battery please? Thanks.

Some people have had issues with the radio code etc (not just on the Superb).

However I have had my battery disconnected with no issues (when i removed the seats to power down the airbags) at all and everything works as it should/ did before.

Thanks. I'll make sure I find the radio code first then!

No need, it'll come up as safe to start with, then after a short period the radio will self set the code, it's programmed into the ECU.
