Pollen filter change

Featured Replies

Evening,

In a bid to cure my smelly aircon, I've carried out a few things I found in a search on here, used aircon cleaner (comma one) and replaced the pollen filter. Its better, but still a little smelly, so tried the magic tree trick.

My question is, what else could be causing the smell, as I can't see any signs of water ingress. Also which side of the pollen filter should the magic tree go in. Is the side nearest the seats the correct side ?

Thanks !

Did you remove the old pollen filter when you let off the comma bomb?

If not then the bacteria are possibly still around.

I used the comma bomb on it own first, just sat it at the front of the passenger seat, but didn't touch the pollen filter.

I then decided to change the pollen filter today, still a bit smelly, so let another comma bomb off, this time following the instructions and put it in the back.

Still a little bit of a stale smell however.

Car is still a little bit smelly this morning, with two cans of cleaner used and a new polen filter.

Can anyone tell me where the recirculation inlet is in the car ? Thinking about spraying some cleaner in there next ?

Cheers !

Are you sure the aircon does set to recirculation when you press the button - could be flaps sticking.

If recirc is setting then the bomb cleaner would be sucked right through the system and after 2 bombs it should be clear/clean.

If recirc does not function properly that could account for the lingering smell.

I think the recirc button/function is ok, as I can hear the motor moving the flap and can also note the change in blower/suction noise.

Does the recirc mode pass air through the pollen filter ? As cheezemonkhai mentioned this last night about removing it first. I guess if it does recirc air though the pollen filter, then that'll be filtering most of the cleaner.....

I did this when doing it on another car with the same dual zone system.

Remove the pollen filter completely and close the box up.

Set the aircon manually to blow through all three outlets and also to recirculate.

Fire away with it not on econ.

That seems to have done the trick on that car and it certainly smelt quite a lot.

The problem you have is that the bacteria may have survived the first clean on the old pollen filter and then you put a new one in so they may be on that and then they have survived the second clean on the pollen filter.

That is my logic for taking the old one out, cleaning the system and then putting a new one in.

there was a similar thread last week where the guy (after i suggested the pollen filter) was told to empty his washer bottle out and put some milton sterilizer in it squirt it through and re top it... dont know if that will help???
