Fault Codes this morning! Help!

Wardy

Recommended Posts

Got a slight stutter in third last night, at low revs. Changed down to 2nd and it seemed to clear. Then this morning, car started up fine but then started bunny-hopping. Engine check light flashing. Sounded rough, like all cylinders weren't firing and quite a lot of vibration through the car when on throttle! Had to drive on a bit, then I was able to check with VAG-COM. Got the following:

Fuel issue, or something more serious? Currently running a tank of Tesco-99, from the same station I always used. Between a half and 3/4 remaining.

Thoughts and suggestions please. Otherwise it doesn't look good for a trip down to the National tomorrow :(

Thanks,

Steve

Sounds like it could be coil packs mate casuing the other faults.

Try changing the coil pack on Cylinder 1.

Dunno if you have got any but Skoda Assist/RAC Usually have them although when mine went they didnt.

I had a similar list of faults when my coilpack went

Thanks for the info mate. Got a VW garage just down the road, so could pop down there for one. I do have breakdown cover, but now sat at home as I wasn't going far, so seems a bit pointless. If it's easier I'll just go down to VW. You got a Part Number handy? :)

Cheers,

Steve

Might wanna get a couple mate. I had it explained to me that when one goes they all seem to go over time till you end up replacing all four.

They are about £31 each iirc.

If thats not the problem take the print out with you to the VW garage and ask if the Technician can have a look at the faults. They should be able to tell you more accurately if that is the problem or something else.

Thanks people! :D

Coilpacks it is then. Seems to be intermittant, as I cleared the faults and did a 10min test round some country lanes nearby. Couldn't seem to reproduce the stuttering/hesitancy in 3rd, but then minutes from home on a light throttle uphill in 4th, bunny-hopping/vibration returned, along with a flashing engine check light

Need to look up how to change them now! ;) But you reckon I should just bite the bullet and buy four?

Just rescan, and faults have 768 (random cylinder misfire) and 769 (cylinder 1 misfire) have returned. Does that suggest that two of the coilpacks are maybe faulty at the same time?

Where abouts are you steve i can give you a hand if you wish as im in Cheshire.

If not its a piece of pi55 to do. Remove engine cover, you will see the 4 coilpacks on top of engine. Unscrew the 2 Torx screws that hold in the Ignition electrics. Unclip each coil pack and pull off connector gently towards back of engine bay. Lift out coil pack (they go L-R 1-4) insert new one and reconnect everything back up. It literally takes about 2 mins.

As for the Random cylinder fault im not sure. I do remember having roughly the same fault codes as you when mine went but unfortunately i never kept the readout once id sorted it. It could just be from the one or it could be that any number are going upto all 4 of them

As for buying all 4 its up to you. Mine went at about 36k. Im on 42k now and no others have gone. But i have spare now just incase. I would defo say get at least 2 and keep the old ones in till they do go.

If you have any probs PM me and im sure i can pop round to sort it for you.

Just rang the local VW dealer and they've got two in stock, so I'll get them both. Part number has changed apparently, but I'll update with that when I get them.

£27.91+VAT, so £31.10 each.

Steve

If its still under warranty then call Skoda Assist. They keep them on board and it won't cost you a penny :)

Thats what I did when my 2 went.

Yep 07K

Good to know, but the VW place is nearer :)

Think I'll just replace the cylinder 1 pack straight away, then go for another road test. Bit confused random/multiple cylinder error code though, as surely engine management would know which cylinder was not behaving correctly
