Felicia failed MOT please help

Featured Replies

hi,new on here as haven't need to post before.

Right,my Felicia P reg, has failed its mot and need some advice on how to fix it.

1.Offside front (tie rod) steering locking device missing.

what is it,where does it go and how much are they?

2.offside and nearside brake hose ferrules excessively corroded.

Is this easy to fix?

3.offside and nearside brake pipes excessively corroded.

Again,easy fix?

I have quite a good mechanical knowledge but have never worked on Felicia before so thought I would ask on here before starting the job.I don't have a manual for it so a pointer in the right directoion would be appreciated.

thanks:)

Hi and welcome! :)

1. I suspect the MOT tester is referring to the split pin which should be there. On the track rod end is one of these nuts Skoda Track Rod End Castle Nut Favorit/Felicia on eBay (end time 29-Jul-09 11:57:29 BST) the split pin goes through a hole in the track rod end. If you're lucky you'll find the hole after some poking and be able to put a split pin through and bend the ends. The bad news is I suspect the split pin is still inside that hole, but the ends have corroded off, and it may be difficult to recover the hole plus the nut may be difficult to undo. If you're unlucky you'll have to carefully blow torch the nut to get it off and replace the track rod end and the nut (if you count the number of turns to remove the old track rod end carefully and put on the new one by that many turns you're tracking should still be close if the new part is identical to the old one.) You could also use a nyloc nut but you need a fine pitch one not readily available.

2. and 3. I figure brake hose ferrules refers to the connecting ends - therefore new brake hoses. Brake pipes are relatively easy to replace. You can either buy yourself a roll of brake pipe, some brake pipe unions, and a flaring kit - or many motor factors will make up brake pipes for you, usually they like to see the old one so they can make it the same length etc. I would get hold of a good brake spanner. Just be careful that when you bleed the brakes afterwards the pedal doesn't go down further than it usually would (put a brick or block of wood or something under the pedal). When bleeding it will sink all the way to the bottom and this means the seals are dragged against the unused corroded bore of the master cylinder which means more hassle.

This should all be relatively easy to fix though.

1) Agreed. Before doing anything else, Have a look to see if the hole's clear. If it is, just fit a new split pin.

Otherwise, look for a drift or nail that's about the same size as the split pin on the other side.

Now give the castelated nut a dose of PlusGas (accept no substitutes, particularly not Water Dispersant-40), and go and have a cuppa. When you return, try to drive the pin out with a hammer and your drift.

2 & 3) I think the ferrules are on the flexipipes rather than the fixed lines. Otherwise as described, and do buy a proper brake spanner (which is like a 6-sided ring spanner with one of the corners of the hexagon cut out so it can go over the pipes).

Agree with all the above replies.....Ferrules are the metal sealed end of the flexy brake pipes
