think turbo is gone, only done 14k

Featured Replies

on my way to work this morn went to overtake a tractor and the car just lost power and cut out:eek: there was no loud bang or whooshing noise and didnt realise any smoke. it runs with the oil filler cap off so i imagine its the turbo as it cuts out once the cap is replaced! car is still under warranty so hopefully its covered. just waiting for skoda assistance recovery now so fingers crossed

Hopefully it will be a hose that's popped off somewhere rather than a properly failed turbo.

It's a relatively common occurrence.

i hope so too but had a look around the engine bay and could not see anything.

theres no whooshing noise and the engine will only run/tickover with the oil filler cap off, thats what made me think it was the turbo. would this happen if the pipe had poped off?

thanks

If it were just turbo related then you would be able to drive the car normally albeit with less power. The bit that is worrying that something more serious has gone wrong is that it won't run without the oil fill cap. At least you have the warranty for an expensive repair.

Maybe something awry in the crankcase ventilation causing the engine to pressurise when the oil cap is on? Good luck getting some Sokda dealers to even find that!

I didnt find that, when my turbo went the car was completely undriveable, no limp mode.

Just fire. :thumbdwn:

Ouch.

It depends on how the turbo failed to be fair.

When the one on my octavia went the car still drove ok (though down a bit on power) but made a horrible screeching noise.

Mine went pop and was billowing white smoke from the tailpipe. Oil was burning all the way through the exhaust.

Everytime I touched on the throttle I could see flames firing out the back - this was from my rear view mirror

Cool!

Not much fun for you at the time but I bet it looked pretty spectactular!

well, the garage rang me at work today, and indeed it was the turbo. they said a pipe had come off and there was bits of the turbo fins in it:eek:

i hope they will completely clean evrything to ensure no debrys are left behind before fitting the new parts. still odd that a turbo just went without warning on a car less than 3 yrs old and 14k miles!

Quite a catastrophic failure then - unusual on a standard car with such low mileage.

yes i know, and the car has been well looked after/serviced and never thrashed.

tis very odd:confused:

Bad casting slipped through quality control?

Most likely! 07 plate with 27k :(

popped down to the dealers today to see what progress they made. they showed me the turbo:eek: crikey, the inlet turbine was wrecked and the whole thing was jammed, they might have to remove the head if any debry has gone into the engine! i truly hope not:(

got the car back today:D

they replaced the turbo, all the pipework and joints including a new intercooler just incase some debry was in it, they even changed the oil and filter so im well chuffed. have been driving like a granny today, how long should i take it easy on the turbo for now?

Excellent  pleased for you. Turbo shouldn't need run in, as it's a shell type bearing with no metal to metal contact.

Glad to see that this has all been sorted. :D

I'm glad it's sorted too, but remember, driving it like a granny can cause Turbo failure. I've posted before about low mileage cars and generally trying to avoid them like the plague as it almost certainly means the engine has never been warmed up properly. A nice old lady I know does 8 miles per week in her '04 plate vRS. She gets in it every morning, starts it up, takes it out of the garage. Turns the engine off to take the keys out in case someone steals it while she shuts the garage door. Then she drives the half a mile to the shop, has a natter, buys her bread, milk and a tin of catfood, then drives home. On Sunday she goes to the church. That's two miles away. Once a month she goes to her sisters which is a mammoth 15 miles away. She drives slowly, to be polite about it.

It's an August 04 car and it has done just over 4000 miles.

Now, that car is spotless (I know, because I wash it for her and I've personally put over 20 coats of wax on it:rolleyes:) but I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole. She says she's never seen the engine water temperature guage standing upright, which surprised her, and she asked me to look at it just after she got it.

She has the oil changed annually by the local dealer who are pushing her very hard to trade it for a new Fabia 3 (she always buys the top model, bless her), but she doesn't see the point as it's not rusty yet (She always sold her Mini or Metro when it got rusty).

Now, be honest, does that sound like a good long-term proposition?

i agree with you, i purchased my car in jan this year with 6,300 miles but it wasnt used for short journeys, just not used as the couple who owned it lived abroad most of the year! when they were using it they did fairly long journeys but the car was not driven for months inbetween. so this should be the ideal car to go for, anyway just hope all is fine from now on.

Yes and no. I agree that the engine side of it is probably just fine (although you are supposed to fill up with special oil I think), but unless the car was stored on blocks then it sat on it's springs and shocks for months without moving.

I've had personal experience of coming back to my rally car after it's been laid up on the lifts for 6 months (no wheels fitted) and all the wheel bearings had locked solid. That was very painful on the wallet (you should try getting wheel bearings for a 39 year old car!) So now it gets dropped and run for 100 miles in each direction every month regardless and it definitely runs far better for it.
