window sticker hell

Featured Replies

Hi guys

After 3 years of ownership - the car's 4 years old - I thought I should at last get round to taking the original dealer sticker out of the back window. :o

The pain is that it's one of those thin film ones - the type that are applied to the window and then the backing is pulled off - and is well and truly baked on (and looks a mess cos it's not even on neatly)

Of course, even though the car's a Superb and it's a bit of a pain to reach, scraping it off would be easy - if it wasn't stuck over the heated window elements.

So, any suggestions as to whether there's a type of solvent etc that can soften this sufficiently to remove it without damaging the elements?

cheers

Can you heat it up with say a hairdryer?

Try using a cloth soaked in real hot water to losen it then use a knife blade (if i doesnt damage the elements)

Cellulose thinners.

wd40 is also good for getting the sticky residue off:thumbup:

Also makes the whole car stink for about a week :(

thanks to you all for your prompt responses.

Of the ideas suggested I think I'll go with the cellulose thinners first. It seems to me that the hairdryer will soften it but leave it sticky and still needing a solvent; getting it hot enough with a damp cloth will result in a soaking parcel shelf (it's not a hatchback) and still leave sticky stuff on the window; WD40 probably will indeed smell too much, and potentially stain the parcel shelf; and I don't want to go anywhere near with a knife blade - it's too difficult to accurately control it around the elements while reaching over the back seat. Of course if the thinners don't work...

RainX window cleaner. Works a treat on stickers.
