Starter motor issue. Impending failure?!

Featured Replies

My starter motor is the improved 1kw felicia version. I recently left my car a couple of weeks without use and when I came to start it the solenoid clicked but the motor did not turn. A few tries later it spun and the car started. It did not seem to spin any slower than usual either. I thought it may have been the battery needed a bit of charge so went for a bit of a drive. After a short stop at the petrol station it started first time. However after a couple of hours it did the same again. The last 3 times it started ok first time. In the mean time I have added a hammer to my in-car toolkit as I am sure I have heard smacking the starter motor with a hammer can encourage it to start if it decides not to.

My understanding is the clicking means the solenoid is fine, and the motor not turning means the issue is there.

Is the occasional non-turning likely to mean the motor will die soon?

TIA

Certainly sounds that way.

BTW were you busy on sunday? was hoping to see your Favorit

it could be the solenoid, the clicking simply means that that circuit is operating, it doesnt mean the contacts on the other circuit are ok. A solenoids pretty cheap to replace though.

Other option is to run a jump lead from the positive battery terminal to the starter motor terminal, if it doesnt turn.. its starter motor.
