RNS 510 Columbus - Slow Start

Featured Replies

Morning all. I need some advice please.

I have recently installed the Skoda RNS 510 Columbus unit into my Octavia II and the installation itself went just fine. I already had the MFD2 NAV unit installed so was really just a straight swap. Everything is working fine but the unit is very slow to initially start-up when the engine is running. Will give you a scenario.

Ignition on = radio starts up almost instantly.

Engine running = radio takes about 3 min to come to life. Once on it behaves as normal when switching on/off again, until you stop the engine.

Anybody seen this before or have any ideas for me. Thanks.

That's odd, My radio starts up fine when the engine is running, but when just on ignition i get the "welcome to skoda onbaord" (iirc) screen and it takes a while.

I also noticed that when the engine is running i can access my navigation (map or address input) straight away but on ignition i get a loading bar?

My MFD3 sometimes has this odd behaviour. Radio & MP3's usually start straight away (ignition on or engine on) however i usually have to look at the Skoda Logo for about 20 secs (which isn't a problem)

Navigation sometimes takes about 30secs to load up but i have just put it down to the software and the processor not being particularly quick.

I have had 3 different Firmwares on mine aswell and none of them have cured this or speeded the system up so as long as no faults are showing on VCDS i wouldn't worry about it

Glad to see I am not the only one with some strange behavior.

I did call up Skoda and asked them and they mentioned that you cannot really just swap out units from another car and that the unit would need to be programmed into the vehicle. They reckon it would take about 90 min to do for me. Perhaps this would fix my odd behavior....

thoughts?

I noticed it when I played with Brymers at the Gaydon meet. Took a while to awaken.

They are slow to start, especially the Nav part.

The unit runs a custom variant of Linux, and for full Nav functionality you have to wait for it to load from Rom, read and verify the map data from the HDD before its started.

Linux huh Manny? Just as well it wasn't Windows, as the first thing we'd all be practicing is Pressing CTRL ALT and DELETE whilst driving. hehe.

Funny you say that, the Columbus has a three finger reboot in the style of windows just in case it locks up. Press < > and i simultaneously and the system will reboot.

Oops, I spoke too soon. :(

I only picked up my Columbus equiped Vrs on Friday, and the unit is streets ahead of the Pioneer AVIC F900 BT I had in another car - Absolutely dreadful, even on the 'fixed' firmware. Sound quality was good but everything else was awful:thumbdwn:

On another note, anyone got a link to an on-line manual for the Columbus ?

Cheers. :)
