Hey guys, swapping the engines over in my two fellys tonight, anything i need to be aware of? any secret tips?

Do i need to remove the gearbox too on the felly or can i just move the engine half a foot and sneak it out.

Havent got a manual for it so doing it all on the job.

Air ratchets are at the ready and ready to rip all bolts out pronto quickly.

I got a Haynes Manual here which has a whole section on removing the engine. So if you haven't got one, I'll be more than happy to look up any snags you may have.

One of the first paragraphs says "The engine can only be removed as a complete unit - with the transmission"

Once you done it, you can come and do mine and replace it with a 1.8T :D

"The engine can only be removed as a complete unit - with the transmission" - bugger

Oh well does it say that the front of the car should be angle ground off to facilitate removal????

LOL, I can always sign off here :)

I know a few "Travellers" round here that would remove that for you in a few minutes!

It says....."On all models, the engine & transmission are removed as a complete assembly, and are lowered out of the vehicle. The vehicle must therefore be securely supported at a height which leaves sufficient clearance for the combined engine/transmission unit to be withdrawn from underneath".

It goes on to say...." Firmly apply handbrake, slacken front wheel nuts, Jack up front and support on axle stands. Remove front wheels".

Then bizarrely it says after that "Then go and make a cup of tea, sit down in front of "Road Wars" and wonder to yourself why you are doing this in the first place! :D

another idea :-

Take it to the nearest pikey camp and tell em ive hidden a twenty in the car somewhere....

Watch the car get stripped in 10 minutes flat. Itll be like watching an f1 pit stop!

Good luck with it!

We used to have Transit Dropsides at work and we had two of them stolen one lunchtime. 45 minutes later the police found them on a farm track minus engines, interior and bodywork!

why would you nick a transit? :rotz:

pickeys have no taste

maannn aching after that!

Used an engine hoist in the end to lift the front of the car up and slid the engine out underneath it. Easy peasy. Stripping all the goodies out of the car was a bit of a bugger though!

Still j.d and all that.

Well it wasnt too bad swapping the engine, took 4 hours to strip the old one out , swap the gearboxs over and refit the new engine.

Had a bit of a mare when my mate lifted off the drive shaft cover and the roller bearing collapsed all over the floor... AAARRRGGHHHH

Still after 20 minutes of crawling around on the floor it was back together.

Robbed loads of goodies out of the old one, the funs now got a much nicer interior, with height adjustable drivers seat!!!! (so so so much better)

Also robbed the electric mirrors and door cards so they will be going on.

Good thing i brought a donor car to replace the engine in the fun rather that just buy an engine, turned out the exhaust manifold was cracked and the front part of the exhaust was splitting too, so we robbed everything off the donor :)

Thanks for the help chaps :) my car is now running brilliantly. If a little thirsty. I think the throttle bodies a bit poo on this one, so im going to swap my old one onto it.

Wow thats was quick work - Im impressed! Glad its running ok.

I cursed it, nipped to my parents for a visit and... that horrible sound of nothingness. Wouldnt b***** start. I thought...ah ill bump it down the hill.... but it still didnt start..so i was at the bottom of the hill with a non running car... bugger.

whipped the plugs out and they are completely knackered. I should have checked em when i swapped the engine to be honest. Never mind lesson learnt and all that. Ill get a new set in the morning. Might swap the throttle body too as it was drinking fuel this morning.
