Spitting back on cold start

Featured Replies

My Fabia 2 (1.2 petrol 70bhp engine) has now done 750 miles. I have noticed that every time I start it from cold, it misses and spits back on one beat - very soon after the engine picks up on starting - (maybe it occurrs on the 3rd or 4th spark). The engine revs momentarily dip as if its going to cut out but immediately picks up again and everything subsequently is OK. It doesnt do this on warm/hot starts.

As its a very specific situation (one misfire on a cold start), and so difficult to demonstrate, do you think the dealer will take me seriously if I complain? Or has anyone experienced or heard about this before.

Similar happened to my car (1.4 petrol engine).

Fuel pump changed under warranty, problem disappeared...

As you pointed, difficult to demonstrate. I've recorded to the camera and went to the dealer... :)

Skodakid, it could be fuel pump, but it's more likely to be a sticky injector, or faulty spark plug or poor plug cap fit. Check the plug caps first, make sure they are all fitted properly by giving them all a firm press onto the plug. You'd be suprised how many new cars come with improperly fitted caps and this can be missed at PDI. Once running a car can appear to run normally even with a loose plug cap.

If that doesn't do it, then get your garage to check the injectors for impedance, they are electronic. When cold it takes more juice to open and close them. I doubt it's an injector though, and in my experience more likely to be a faulty plug. There are other things it can be but this sort of thing is usually something obvious. Don't worry it'll be fixed easily by your garage. Good luck and please let us all know what you find.
