vRS gearbox internals.

Featured Replies

Picked up a vRS gearbox (EHA) cheaply and was wondering if it was worth swapping the ratios into my 4x4 (FEX) 'box? Anyone done it, or is it a waste of time and money?

probably a waste of time as i dought there is much if any difference. i think the only worthwhile one is either a diesel gearbox ratios are higher i think but you need a lot more power to use it, or the 6speed box which isnt the most worthwhile mod as the ratios are pretty similar.

Don't know if this helps

I searched under Changing gearbox ratios and had a good trawl through and found this, in bold and underlined !

"Had similar feelings & after the IHI conversion was carried out I was hitting the limiter in top toooooooooooooo often but there is a solution. Jabba sourced a low mileage s/hand RS box for me & they had the internals fitted into the 4x4 box, the diff was also strengthened at the same time. It now means according to my calcs should I hit the limiter which is at 7800 now I will be doing 189.2 mph so somewhat unlikely.

Its a definate improvement though when cruising on the motorway, It almost feels like

4th now is where 5th used to be."

I guess the 02J and 4x4box are virtually identical on the inside.

This is what I found on ratios and speed in gears:

"Gear ratios/mph per 000 for RS as follows:

1st = 3.3/6.2

2nd = 1.94/10.5

3rd = 1.31/15.6

4th = 1.03/19.8

5th = 0.84/24.3

Therefore max speed at 7k is

1st = 43

2nd = 74

3rd = 109

4th = 139

5th = 170.1

4x4

1st----3.780--- 4.8

2nd---2.060--- 8.87

3rd---1.360--- 13.5

4th---1.030--- 17.8

5th---0.840--- 21.8

Final drive: 3.940

Max mph @ 6k (I think that is where your limiter is, but if I'm wrong you'll need to revise these figures)

1st = 28.8

2nd = 53.2

3rd = 79.2

4th = 106.8

5th = 130.8

TT (6 speed box, redline 6600)

1st Gear Ratio 3.417

2nd Gear Ratio 2.105

3rd Gear Ratio 1.481

4th Gear Ratio 1.152

5th Gear Ratio 1.167

6th Gear Ratio 0.970

Final Drive Ratio 4.20"

Sorry if I have lifted someone elses info , I saved the important bits to a word file and I can't remember who posted them originally

Hope it helps a bit
