Ive been to the dealer and they just say its not a warranty issue, just dosen't seem right on a 4k/58 plate.

Anyone any thoughts?

Cheers.

Looks perfectly normal to me. I'm surprised Skoda bothered to paint drums TBH.

Yeah, its normal for them to go like that, like almost all rear drums on cars. What I do every 2 or 3 years is to remove the wheels, wire brush the rusty drums and blow 2 or 3 coats of primer on them to make them look brand new. At the same time I clean the wheels , brake pipes etc and lightly grease the hub so the wheel will come off easily - first time you try it might be difficult!

One day I might paint them with black hammerite or something.

99.9% of drum brakes are rusty

I paint them with matte black spray ;)

Looks better...

hia irfant, it certainly makes the alloys stand proud with the black drums.

not only a good idea but looks good too, most productive

hmm rusty brakes but your alloys look to have a nice flake in them *thumb up*

Carisbrook, yes...I agree with the guys comments. My rear drums are going rusty just like yours. Manufacturers either paint them in primer, or more usually, they give them a coat of grey zinc rich paint. Either way, they rust!

Irfant, splendid job on your drums...very smart indeed. Skodakid, your regime is a good one. I'm going to give mine a coat of Hammerite Smoothrite in grey (after careful cleaning of course). The advantage of this is the temperature resistance of Hammerite. Should last for two or three years before needing doing again. But everyone does there own thing on this...and quite right too!

Paint the silver so looks like have rear brakes :)

Get them ceramic coated somewhere like camcoat. It takes really high temps and not burn off at all.

A bit OTT considering the drum is a disposable bit! I would think drums on a fabia rarely get much more than hand hot.

True, they shouldn't get too hot... unless you are driving with the hand brake on. Rear brakes don't do much anyway 20-30% of brake power (correct me if I am wrong)

They shouldn't get too hot on a road car with a regular bias setup. Its just a bit more hardy than a coat of hammerite.

hammerite silver paint 2yr guarantee

Saw a 2 yr old Fabia Mk 2 today which had very visible orange rust on its drums from a distance!

I do think Skoda let themselves down for the sake of a coat of paint - I think they come out of the factory with just primer coat on the drums. Or is 0.5 euros too much to waste?

  • 2 weeks later...

Just thought I would let you know what Fabia drums look like when painted with Hammerite 'Silver' smoothrite. Used wire wool to clean up the drums, then washed them with Hammerite Thinners. Two coats of smoothrite later...and here's how they look. They should be ok for 2-3 years I reckon.
