Air filter replacement

Featured Replies

Should this be done at each service?

Just wondering as one of the lads just had a 40k miles (I think) service. He asked afterwards if the air filter was replaced and he was told no as he didn't need to be done on every service. It got me thinking if this was normal practice, and if maybe mine was similiar in that it wasn't replaced that it maybe might be contributing towards a slightly poor fuel consumption.

I was under the impression this would be an annual thing to change.

No.

Air filter is usually 40k. Sounds crazy I know but thats the truth. It's not uncommon to change them before that.

40k is the official interval, but this is too much. It noticeably affects MPG.

It's 60k on the Octy II TDI, but I'd suggest doing it either every 10-15k if you can DIY it or if you pay, then get it done every time the car is in for a service, for the extra charge.

At 40k they are like blocks of soot in the MK I and in the MK II you notice a big tail off in MPG well before the 40-60k mile figures.

The extra filters easily pay for themselves in terms of fuel saved IMHO, never mind the fact that the engine is breathing properly.

You can if you want buy a "long life" after-market filter that never needs changing. These are made by K&N, Green, Pipercross, etc. Most of these however need washing out and then some need re-oiling. You may get a slight increase in power and better MPG but they initially cost 4 or 5 times more than an ordinary OEM paper one.

That might explain why my consumption seems to have gotten worse. Any idea of a part number the filter is? and how much they are?

Just checking my service sheets just in case it's been already done.

I see Filterelem 06d115562, I assume this is an Oil Filter (seen it mentioned on another sheet as Oil Filter). Also seen another filterelem 1K2819653B and Filter 06F133843A.

On the service docuement it states that the filter to be replaced every 90,000km or 6 years. I see a note referring to "if the air filter was opened before the 6 year period or 90000km were reached, hold the 90000km or 48month interval".....what does that mean by opened.

I did remove cover & take out filter to inspect before, tbh it looked clean to me but is that what they mean above about being "opened"..

Are these Air Intake Cleaner any use M4068, seen it mentioned on service sheet.

I pop a fresh one in every other service (DIY now, out of warranty). The Octy seems peppier with a fresh one in. In the Furby I have a Green, and the amount of crap that came out of it when I cleaned it this time was unbelievable. I've no idea where it all came from, but I've never seen such a dirt-ridden filter. Even my Dad was amazed, and he was a mechanic for 40+ years.
