VCDS & Windows 7

Featured Replies

I have a MacBook Pro and im using VMWare Fusion to use VCDS.

Everything worked fine with Vista however i see to have a problem with Windows 7

Basically i have installed VCDS (both 805 and 907 Beta) and everything is fine (have to run normal in windows XP compatibility mode)

However when i start up VCDS i get an error message saying Can't open codes file: CODES.DAT :confused:

If i then click ok the program loads up but it says i have -1 codes loaded

Has anyone any ideas on how to fix this or do i have to wait for the full version of 7 to be available

Cheers

It sounds like your installation is either not complete or the codes.dat file is removed due to another program(antivirus). Try installing the software in another directory and check to see if the codes.dat file is installed.

Try running in Vista compatible mode.

Nope the file is there it just says it can't be read

Try running in Vista compatible mode.

Still have same problem.

I have even downloaded again and tried taking the CODES.DAT from the Vista VM where it works but it still encounters the same problem:confused:

I suspect its a permissions issue with the way your fusion is installed. I had no problems using VCDS on both windows xp and windows 7 on my macbook. I tested VMware, parallels and bootcamp.

How do i check the permissions on VMWare to make sure it's right?

I had the exact same problem with Windows 7 Beta.

The solution is very simple: Right-click the VCDS shortcut or executable and select "Run as Administrator". VCDS will then run normally with CODES.DAT working.

You can also right-click the VCDS executable and select Properties, then check "Always Run as Adminstrator" or something similar.. so next time you just have to double click the VCDS link and it'll open normally.

However, I always get a Windows 7 warning message stating "Do you want to allow Ross-Tech to edit the contents of your hard drive?" every time I open VCDS. It's a little annoying but at least VCDS runs normally. You can probably turn off that warning message by adjusting your security settings in Windows 7 Control Panel.

It's ok i've sorted it now.

None of the above would work so i just Bootcamped Windows 7 and all is Hunky Dory
