Strange noise from vRS

Featured Replies

Ok i have had this problem for a while now but it's intermittent

When driving along at under 30 mph i have a strange clanging metal on metal sound coming from the rear drivers side of the car. ( well it could be passenger side but it doesn't sound like it)

It sounds like something is hitting the brake dust shield ( the bit behind the brake disc at the rear not sure if that's the correct name)

I have had the car up several times on Jacks/Axle stands etc but can't seem to find anything that could be causing the noise.

It only happens on bumpy roads/speed bumps etc and i cant replicate the sound by trying to rock the car etc. You can only hear the noise as well with the drivers window open

Anybody had this before and got it resolved. Or does anyone know what it could be. I got a 300 mile trip to make tomorrow and don't want my wheel coming off on the M'Way

Help appreciated

Exhaust heat shield or box?

Have you checked the wheel nuts (Unlikely to be the problem though - last time I did the rear wheels were about a quarter turn off what I could tighten them to with the OEM tyre iron though, so worth checking for piece of mind anyway)?

Have you tried spinning the wheel while its jacked up to see if it catches anywhere. I know the exhaust is the other side, but check that's mounted securely and that the heat shield is secure too. Anything rattling around the tyre well/hanging off the undercarriage?

Tried all that

Exhaust heat shield is fine and nothing hanging down from the car etc

Is it you?

Or spare ammo?

A mate of mine had this on his Passat and it was found to be a broken spring.

Couldn't detect it whilst driving and the sound was almost like something rolling around in the spare wheel well.

Not a sound you'd associate with a broken spring, but might be worth checking just in case.

A stone in the brake stone shield (trap), a loose bolt on the ARB (had this on an old Hyundai once), or a broken spring (well known on the Polo apparently).

Is it a clang or a 'cheep'?

Might be you have a worn/broken spring or shock absorber, that is leading to the ARB making contact with the lower suspension arm.

I hope it's not a worn/broken spring as they are Eibachs and have only been on just over a year

I'll be kicking off with them if it is.

Car is going to JKM on Tuesday anyway so will get them to have a look. I don't think it is as surely it would just get more noticeable at higher speeds whereas it doesn't seem to happen over 30mph.

It is the same sound as tapping on the brake shield so im assuming it's something around that area and im hoping it's just a trapped stone/twig

Carl:thumbup:

Could it be a loose balancing weight flapping around?...ya never know

Well one thing that did go right at JKM was that the Noise was cured.

It was a stone bouncing around inside where the rear spring is on the Drivers side.

1 Result :D

Just need to solve Power problem now

Carl

Ah well mate; one down, one to go :D
