electrical gremlins (mirrors and windows)

Featured Replies

I have a mark 1 octavia vrs and have devloped a gremin in my electrics and would love some help please

The electric mirrors have stopped working completely along with the electric windows. The windows will not work from either the main control on the drivers door, or any of the switches on the other doors.

The other morning my mirrors grew a mind of there own but this was solved by turning the ignition off and back on, the drivers mirror control ® was moving both of the mirrors. Also I did have an intermitent fault with the drivers window, sometimes when trying to wind it back up it would go up so far and then come back down part of the way for no apparent reason.

I have checked all the fuses this evening but all were fine. I was thinking maybe the next step would be to check the relays? would this be a good move? I am however unsure of how to get at them..... any ideas?

I've done a quick search of the site and found people getting problems with the control module in the door due to water ingress, however I do not have problems with my central locking so was unsure if this was likely (although I have an aftermarket alarm so maybe the central locking is dealt with differently...). Although the finalle of this problem has been after a day of horiffic rain :(

Cheers for the help

Mark

I doubt it would be the relays. Sounds like water has got into the door. Water & electricity don't go well together & it would explain all the strange faults you are getting. Take the door panel off & look closely at the connectors, if they look dodgy, then replace or repair them.

ok i'll give that a blast at the weekend, hopefully all will be well after that. which connectors should I be looking at, I have no idea how many or what is behind there really... or is it there just one big multiplug?

This is a feature of the mirrors that makes it easy to adjust both mirrors for parking etc

If they have stopped alltogether then you need to check the connector in the door. it is located at a strange angle that seems to allow water to pool causing the pins to get corroded and sometimes snap off. A good clean can help and seal it back together with something. you may only have a few corroded pins which means that not all things stop working.

If you still have problems then you are looking at replacing the central conveinience unit.

It would be best to get the codes read with VAG COM to confirm what the errors are though

oops, I have never noticed it adjusting both before with the control on the R, don't i now feel silly lol.

Will have a check of the connector at the weekend and post up how it goes, and then if that looks fine a trip to the dealer for some fault codes.

Thanks for the help :)

Stripped it all apart, and found the multiplug at the odd angle discussed in this thread, at a 45 degree is angle, I assume this is the one, was the only one I could see.

I took it off and visually inspected it, but does not appear to be corroded. Upon putting the elec windows switch back on to test, there was no change. I will get some contact cleaner and try it anyway, but failing that are there any more suggestions? Or am I fast approaching a trip to the local garage?

cheers,

Hello Mark,

I have read you post from last year and I think my Mk 1 Octavia has a similar window fault. Sometimes after locking the car with the remote i return to find the windows have all dropped about a centimetre. Please could you tell me if you managed to solve the problem with your car and if there are any VAG codes that might help.

Cheers Rob.
