retro 12v socket in boot and le tyre caps

Featured Replies

Spoken to my local dealership, Ingrams of Ayr ( hit and miss customer service merchants ) 3 weeks ago without reply despite a reminder 2 weeks ago. Short staffed and will get back to me,mmmm . still waiting , how many reminders guys??? Can anyone give me a price on how much a 12 v socket would be to get fitted into my octys vrs very large boot:) Planning to go to France on driving holiday and need a coolbox. Also prowling round the VRS LE estate in the showroom I noticed the new one has alloy matched tyre cap covers. Despite asking for these with the aboves service department, they checked and said they are plastic They will get back to me..... still waiting.....I am not deterred!

Can someone please put me in touch with someone that knows what they are doing. Would getting a retro 12v fitment invalidate the warranty? Are the tyre caps guaranteed via Skoda manufacturing not to weld onto your TPM system valves causing you a massive headache as reported elsewhere. If so do I need to go to an alternative Skoda dealership that actually cares about giving aftersales service?? Any answers gratefully received!!!

TPM does not use any valves or anything within the wheel. TPM works by monitoring the rotational speed difference between the wheels. If you get a puncture, this changes and triggers the warning.

Dont bother with the caps, they will get stolen in a couple of days no matter which ones you fit.

tpm uses abs sensors and detects the difference in rolling diameter when the tyer deflates !

thanks!

doesnt alloy caps fuse with the valve over time unless you use vaseline or suchlike as a lubricant? At least thats what Ingrams confirmed. Read horror stories from halfrauds supplied caps in auto xprs costing the owner a bomb to get them fixed. I like subtly styling the car but not to attract too much attention to a race blue vrs! Cant win. Anyway any takers on the 12 v gig? Thanks for the advice up to now. This is why we love Briskoda, You get real answers from people who know!

Thanks

try copper grease on the threds

Is there not a 12v socket in the boot compartment?? mine has one and there is one in the superb, wife forgot about the cool box yesterday and flattened the original now done 200K 03 superb battery

I want to know where all the metal caps that get knicked go to - because I never seem to see them on Fiestas/Corsas/Saxos etc :D

Can't imagine a retrofit 12v socket will be too much hassle. Are you just have part number info, or the garage to also do the work for you?

Steve

Maplin sell a socket for about £5 and then it's just a case of running a switched live to it from the fuse box and a ground to the bodywork in the area you fit it. Couple of spade connectors plus suitably thick wire and a fuse for the fuse box.

I'd say it shouldn't cost more than £50 with a decent auto electrician.

Had a look around the boot but def. no 12v socket around. How much should a Skoda dealership charge for this supplied and fitted? What really miffs me is when I ask about the caps the dealership check the computer parts manual and insist they are plastic despite a model in the showroom sporting metal/alloy caps! Part no. info would be helpful.

Thanks

I believe only the estates get a 12v socket in the boot, looking at putting one in the boot of my hatch too.

If someone could do a quick write up that would be great.

With everything you get on an Octy Elegance, was surprised no 12v socket in boot.

I'd reckon that what you really need if you are using a big load like a cool-box, is an "intelligent" 12 volts outlet - ie one that disconnects when the battery voltage drops off a bit. One easy way round this would be to get fitted an outlet that only supplies that socket when the alternator is charging ie use the "charging sense" to control a relay - it is quite possible to get done.

Yep, my nice shiny valve caps were stolen !

Now running 99p black plastic specials !

Incidentally, the posh £1.99 shiny ones they had in my local "Motor Whatever" are identical to the standard issue items....?

czechsmasher its true the alloy caps weld themselves onto the valve, aluminium and brass dont mix. stick with plastics maybe alloy ones if your goin to shows plus mate as you are from north ayrshire aswell (irvine for me) you will know shiney dust caps go missing within about 2 nights of fitting them to your car. especailly if they are on a lovely race blue vrs.

as for the 12v supply just becareful on the size of cool box. those 12v sockets aint great for big items. burn out.

Boot sockte is definitely estates only. There was a thread on here about a week ago, which gave several suggestions as to cable routing for the extra socket.

As regards draining the battery, have a good look at the coller box market. We have a Coleman box, which is many years old, but incorporates a voltage sensor, so IT cuts off when the battery gets low.

NB, take a tape measure. Our box is too tall for the estate boot (with VBF), so you can't close the cover!

I get my metal tyre caps from the parts department of my local BMW dealer.

They must be about the only relative BMW bargain going: Last count 35p each.

I have never had a problem with them 'welding' on, but I do check my tyre pressures regularly (normally every couple of weeks).

Is there no way of tightening the valves caps up with a spanner?

I bought some for my other half a couple of years back and never tightened them up. They went missing that night. lol.

I never realised they were such a wanted item.:rotz:

Look on the local chav's mountain bikes and you'll probably find your valve caps - they're stolen because they're really easy to steal and easy to sell on/use...

As for using a spanner to tighten them on - unless you can hold the valve stem to stop it turning you'll probably twist it out of the wheel tightening the valve caps with a spanner. Black plastic is the new shiny anodizing anyway :P...
