New Fabia VRS ???

Featured Replies

I am a Skoda virgin  about to buy my first VRS. A friend recommended your site, which is fantastic, but a bit daunting in terms of complexity and opinions!

I've tried to glean a few nuggets of info concerning remap/chip upgrades, but would be grateful of confirmation as to the best course of action to take next....

It seems waiting 5-10k miles is a good idea before upgrade? Yes/No?

Should I ask the dealer whilst 'negotiating' price about warranty covering any future remap? - or will this arise suspicion, leading to deep scrutiny on its first service (just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean there isn't someone following you!!!)

If dealer won't play ball, is chip or remap easier to 'forget about' should a warranty claim come up?

Finally, I noticed earlier threads concerning insurance for mods (I see this as an absolute must). I'm currently with Privilege who want

Adawis, welcome to our humble abode.

Maybe not such a good idea about mentioning upgrades as Big Brother looks into the site and could put 2 & 2 together and void your warranty if you should get the car remapped ;) Just a bit of friendly advice as one of our members has been stung already. :( PM's are handy for those types of questions though. :D

Have a look around as there as some great people on this site who can answer a multitude of questions.

Many thanks Chavyboy! I'll keep looking........

What I didn't mention before is that I'm 7'6" with three legs and live in the outer hebrides (should throw BB hey!)

welcome! :D

imho, i'd stay clear of testing the waters with the dealers/service dept. about a remap as there are very many mod-unfriendly dealers out there and skoda UK do read these forums from time to time.......

as suggested by ivan, keep on checking out the site, get as many opinions as possible and make up your own mind. there will *always* be risks of one form or another (even with switchable systems )if you do get your car remapped and it's up to you to decide the risk:benefit ratio *for you*.

me personally had my first octy RS with a switchable remap, didn't tell the dealers but did tell the insurance - would ALWAYS do this.

my second RS came remapped when i bought it new from the dealer but a word of warning - attitudes can vary like the wind depending on the staff at the dealership. in my case, the service manager that i knew well and was mod-friendly was replaced by a mod-hostile bloke!

a cliched phrase but one which i feel sums up remapping and its benefits/pitfalls is, 'if you can't pay, don't play.'

good luck in your decision making! :)

Blatent :D but I like you style Huck

Should I ask the dealer whilst 'negotiating' price about warranty covering any future remap?

One thing to be aware of if you do decide to ask is that the person who decides policy might well change in future, and as such their policy might also change... :)

Personally, I wouldn't bother asking - the official Skoda line is that mods will invalidate your warranty, so any answer you get other than this will be the wrong one... ;)

Whether a dealer would "notice" a remap on warranty work is another matter, but don't go ahead with modding unless you are happy to not have any warranty work done - it's worst case scenario, but pretty likely!

Thanks guys for your prompt advice! (The last time I experienced this level of Chech-love I was in 'Goldfingers' in Prague..Ahem..)

I think I'll keep quiet at the dealer. It'll be a while before the car's ready for a mod so I'll think it over and keep watching this space....

Oops... Sorry Huck, I realise that should have been spelt CZECH.

When I bought mine and picked it up I asked the dealer about performance modifications and their stance. They stated that it would invalidate the warranty and so I left it standard until it expired... well close enough to the date ;)
