Why is it always the last bolt?

Featured Replies

I've been replacing the rear shocks on the Octy because they're about knackered. Did the first side fine (forgot to put the plastic cap back on top though when rebuilding, grr!), the top mount bolts were a bit tight but got them undone in the end and that side rebuilt. Made a start on the other side, got the bottom shock mount undone fine, undid the top mount bolt closest to the back of the car again without any issues and then made a start on the last bolt. Can I get the bloody thing undone?! Can I buttercups! I've started it off but it was either cross threaded when it was put together at the factory or it's really really corroded up there. It moves in stops and starts. You'll really crank on the wrench handle and nothing'll happen and then it'll release all at once with a shriek. Then it's the same again and again. I'm knackered now and have given up for the day. Think I need to find someone with an impact wrench to get the bloody thing off as my sockets started to skip on it (12 point socket) and the only 6 sided socket I've got is a cheap and nasty one that I've now managed to split! Aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrgggghhh!

I've got a 2 foot power bar and a six sided socket.

You want to borrow it?

Never mind, you're miles away...

Thanks for the offer. I've got a fairly decent bar but it's just getting the angle on it within the wheel arch. You can't get it to a position where you can really push on it without it slipping off the bolt.

i would give the bolt a good over night soaking with penertrating fluid then using a good fitting hex socket work the bolt in & out whist spraying oil on it,if you go straight at it with a big bar your more likely to snap the bolt head off!.:) if you havent got access to any air tools this is the only way to get the bolt out ok. hope this helps:thumbup:

There's plenty of room if you have a 6" extension on the bar...

Good luck for tomorrow.

That was what did it in the end. Went out and got a decent set of 6 point sockets (in imperial sizes annoyingly as the bolt seems to fit better in a 5/8 than it does in a 16mm) and a 6" extension bar, left the tyre on so I could rest the end of the breaker bar on it and got it undone. Think the overnight soak in WD40 helped as well. Then nearly ballsed it all up again when I nearly cross threaded the bolt putting it back together! All sorted now though. Thanks for the advice guys!
