Haggling..how much did you save on your car?

Featured Replies

Just interested in how much difference between the first offer a dealer made and what you actually paid. Used or new.

My Octavia was used 06 reg, bought in Jan 09, priced at £6250 at a main dealer. They initially offered me my Seat Toledo plus £4000 cash. I ended up paying £3250 cash with 6 months tax included, which i thought was pretty good seeing as i've never really haggled much before.

I got £500 and 6 months tax on an already cheap vRS, was happy with that.

Great response so far

I thought this might be an interesting thread......obviously not

2.5 year old non metalic Fabia VRS + £2000 = totally new fabia VRS inc metalic paint + leather seats swapped from old to new vehicle.

Don't think i'll ever manage beat that one.

EDIT I should note this wasn't my car but for a friend at the time.

got just over £600 off mine with 6 months tax "thrown in"

must admit i was quite disappointed with that considering im an ex car salesperson myself lol

with the current climate tho it should be a fair bit easier to bag a few discounts, just before i was made redundant at vauxhall they were doing anything to get rid purely to keep stats up. obviously im not saying ur gonna go get thousands off but hey its worth trying ur luck. after all if u dont ask u sure as hell dont get ;)

I went to Drivethedeal and got £1,000 off what any of the other dealers were offering. Which at the time was virtually nothing because the Fabia Estate had not been officially lauched and there was a long waiting list etc etc.

£12500 for a new GPS 1.9, just took the fiat driving instructor deal, and got it for £11k brand new, with £500 cash for duals (which cost me £300) bargin! :)

I didn't really haggle when I got the vRS new. They were already down to 12.5k on the road, so I reckon that'll be hard to beat again when it comes to changing.

£18,700 with options from 3 main dealers near me.

DrivetheDeal - £16,500 for the same car from a main dealer!

Done, and £2,500 better off!

My clio was up at £2500 and when I basically said I'd need to do some stuff to get it into good condition and what was his best price he just dropped straight to £2000 and showed me the invoice to say thats what he paid for it.

Either he was lying or he didnt want the hassle of the work and just wanted to get his money back on it.

There was a fair bit to do on it but the car was still about £1000 under book :D

We bought the wifes car in january from a VW main dealers..

Eos 2.0TDI Sport with a few goodies, 15 months old with 8.5k miles on the clock ( 24.5k new )

On the forecourt for 3 months at 18995,

We saw it at 15995,

Bought it for 14250.

Bargain.

( I do like to haggle though....)

£10900 for Nov 57 Plate PD170 VRS Estate in Race Blue, 20k, just serviced . Book price £13,000. TBF the dealer had it priced as a 30k TFSi so I bought it before he put the price up.:D

edit - forgot to add the golden rules of haggling. Never tell a car dealer what you think your car is worth (if Part X'ing ). He / she will try to get this out of you before revealing the price they are prepared to offer. Know what your car's worth and the price of similar cars to the one your looking at. Before you negotiate, wait for the dealer to show his hand first. Don't ask for silly money off otherwise the dealer will not take you seriously , but start lower than what you think you can reasonably get off ,then start the haggling!
