2001 TDI gets 5L Screenwash Tank!

Featured Replies

Well I finally did it today and fitted a 5l screenwash tank. The basic steps where:-

1) Remove bumper by taking fog lights first, then take all the screws out in the wheel arches by the bumper, then the 3 funny fastners along the botom edge (they have a pin in the center that needs to be pull down first) and finally the 2 big torx bolts on the chassis legs.

2) This step just make life easier, take out bottom off air filter box (take pipe running from front air scoop off at box end only, 1 small screw and then the one bolt that holds the box on then it will pull up), take battery off and then release the battery box by un-doing the 2 bolts at the back on the box and the one in the centre of the base and just gentle move it off to one side. Dont disconnect the wiring!

3) Undue the 3 nuts holding the 2L tank on, look at new tank to see which ones to do.

4) Gentle release the tank and then pull out the pump assembly out once it can be reached.

5) The new tank has three holes in it if you get the tank with level sensing, but if you get the tank without this it will only need 1 blank. Remove from the old tank the cap, filter and rubber grommet that the pump sits in and fit all this to new tank. The extra hole(s) where plugged by using rubber grommets and sealing them in with silicone sealant.

6) Fit new tank and you will find that an extra 10mm nut and washer is needed for the extra mount that goes in a ready made hole!

7) refit in this order, battery box, air box, battery, bumper, fog lights then trims.

No leaks as yet!!! If you take it slowly this is an easy mod and allow around 3 hours. No more running out of screenwash on those salty winter motorways!

Andy pictures would be good but I can add this to the FAQ section if you want ?

Sorry to not do photo's but laptop not up to the task and home pc fubar! Feel free to move it around, this was talked about a few weeks ago, but not sure of anyone else has done this mod. To be honest it sounds complicated but if you are competant with a 10mm spanner, 10mm & 13mm socket set, screwdriver (flat & pozie) and torx set its fairly simple just take your time stripping it all down and keep all the screws etc in separate areas. It was real easy to reassembe, the only difficult bit was get the battery tie down on as theres not a lot of room between the battery and the headlight. If anyone wants further advice pm or email me.

Thanks andy for the update - i'll get around to doing mine when i have some spare time.

I take it your model does not have a level sensor.

The fabia vrs has a level sensor so the 3 holed tank will be required.

Part numbers:

2 holed 4.5 ltr tank - 6Q0 955 453 S

3 holed 4.5 ltr tank - 6Q0 955 453 T

The 3 holed variety is

will this fit a fabia 1.4?

Yes.

I used the 3 hole tank as the dealer could get it overnight, then went down a proper old fashioned car parts shop and the old feller got out the micro-meter, scratched his chin and then went and got me the right grommets! Could not tell you the size, sorry, but they are the ones for steel plate and the plastic is a bit thick for them really but with the aid of the silcone sealant I'm hoping they will do the job.

They will :D I did it on mine when I changed the water bottle on the RS :D

do the octys come with the 5l as standard or something?

Nope, non-headlamp washer ones come with 3 or 3.5. I put in the one from one with headlamp washers so that a) I could run an intercooler water spray in the summer & B) so that in winter I didn't have to keep filling up with screenwash.
