Saw my first Yeti - Ipswich

Featured Replies

Saw my first "real life" Yeti today. I was waiting to turn off a main road and coming the other way was a browny metallic coloured Yeti. Quite distinctive with it's nice front but higher off the road than the normal Octavia/Superb.

As it got closer I realised the very nagging feeling in my brain was this isn't right they're not supposed to be around yet. As it came closer, sure enough, CZ plates.

I wonder if it was on the way to Bristows (Skoda dealer in Ipswich)? Either that or a Czech on holiday.

Anyway it was a very nice looking motor, quite boxy shape.

I have seen the elusive Yeti!

Yes - it was on the way to Bristows - looked up the Yeti roadshow dates and there it was! What a fluke, seeing on the way to the shops then ending up seeing it in the flesh at a dealers. Pics first, sorry for quality was using a cheap and cheerful camera.

Hope they work OK and you can click for larger versions.

I loved the colour - in photos it can look yuk, but it suited this car. First impressions are obviously very subjective, I liked the build quality inside, the big opening roof was brilliant. As was the way the back seats move about.

On the road (driven by the rep), this was the 140bhp diesel, fairly quiet engine, good bit of shove on the move. Ride was good, I was expecting softer, but a good balance between comfort and sporty. Loads of room inside.

There isn't really a lot I can fault, there was nothing about the car or the ride that I didn't like. An observation being it was every bit as well built inside as the Nissan Quashqua (I can NEVER spell that!!!) though did not feel as "high" off the road.

I doubt anyone who orders this will be disappointed and it's certainly on my short list.

Finally, just to say thanks to the rep who was driving this car, VERY helpful and more than happy to take us out for a spin.

Have to agree with all that said above having seen the same car today at Bristo's. (In fact on the same run out as PeteVrs it seems!).

The CR140 engine is certainly at lot smoother in power delivery (from what I could tell as a passenger) than the 140PD Superb I test drove recently.

Looks wise when I first saw it I thought it was a bit bug eyed, but now I quite like it. It's a bit smaller than I thought it would be but the versatility of the rear seats would make it pretty good for those once a year trips to the tip.

All in all quite impressed. I was about to go for a FL Octy VRS but this is making me think twice.

Hahah - Yes I did wonder if you were a fellow Briskodian but after I had been to drool over the candy white megane coupe you were gone. Nice to put a face to a name anyway.

What was it like in the back? Sorry for being a numpty and asking if you had enough legroom - thought I was still in my Fabia

I think for you, like me this would be a major change from a VRS, we would be sacrificing grin-enducing performance for something that appears more sensible and practical, but definitely slower. I really want to drive the more powerful diesel and the petrol versions in September before making a decision because they might not be too far off the pace then you have the best of both worlds.

On the way back I did give the VRS a good boot and thought "Would I miss this?". For what it's worth I did go and sit in their LE Octy VRS, Superb and a few Renaults afterwards and none of them felt as "nice" inside as the Yeti but of course this is very subjective.

While I remember, the front seats in the Yeti were very comfortable too.

I never thought I'd like a brown car but that looks really good on the Yeti!

I went down to Falmouth Garages today to see theirs, a Rosso Brunello TDI 140 in low spec (just single cd player, no rear electric windows) Even on this cheapy version, the interior was very nice, clearly a step up from the Fabia/Roomster.

The 140 engine seemed very quiet and quite punchy too from the passenger seat at least.

Ride wasn't silky smooth like I expected from the reviews (this one was riding on 17" wheels) but it felt nice and firm but at the same time not crashy.

An Elegance spec 1.8TSI or 170TDI would make a very nice motor indeed

The rear seats were pretty good. Usual problem of getting the head restraint up (same issue in the Octavia). I liked the fact you could adjust the seat angle, think the missus did as well once I pointed it out, she was sitting bolt upright! Bit noiser than expected in the back given the reviews I've read. But then again the A12 road surface round Ipswich is pretty naff.

I'm the same regarding the power, sometimes I think I don't really need all this power (petrol Octy Vrs). Then I'll get stuck behind some old duffer and am thankful I have got the grunt to get past. I think it would have to be the 170 yeti, only problem it sounds like to doesnt come out til December.

I've got a lot of thinking to do, facelift estate diesel vrs or yeti 170. Hmmmm.

From the info supplied by Ants (Official UK Yeti Pricing) the TDI 110 & 170 begin production build week 45 early in November, so delivery December sounds about right.

Can't wait to see a Yeti in the flesh. We are currently out on tour with the caravan and are not near any dealers with roadshows at the right time.

Can see a 170 CR TDi being our next car. Looking forward to see how the caravan press rate it.

Roll on March 2011 when I anticipate buying one God willing!

Hmmmm....I am sure I spotted this car in Norwich yesterday - definitely was a Yeti coming around the roundabout, and in this colour - but didn't manage to catch a glimpse of the plate.

Pete

seen one of these the other week, it was just gettin on the m40 south from a43 like a burgundey colour it was also cz registered so thought it was goin to a dealer to be shown.

Been to see the Yeti today at Garland Motors in Aldershot, the one on show was of EU spec, not the UK spec which was a tad disappointing.

However very impressed with the build quality & overall finish of it, seats are superb & comfy much better than my Golf.

Headroom is good in front & rear; The boot seems smaller than my Golf, maybe be a deceptive so I don't know about that & no space for a spare wheel.

The one on show was the 140 CR TDi and I agree with OctaviaT81 it was punchy & quiet for a diesel, however I felt it lacked that little "something", something that I can't quite put my finger on if you know what I mean.

Went out in it for a 10 min test ride and the ride was smooth even over Aldershot's manky roads, very nice, absolutely no complaints there.

I'd like to get one however as things stand I can't make the figures justify the £22k asking price of a 170CR 4x4 in Elegance trim, if I go down a level I only have to add to the cost with options which is nonsensical.

So whilst I love the Yeti, I don't think I'll be getting one as I just can't quite make the figures work:orb_sad_2, at least not without making it difficult financially & it's just not worth doing that.

So I guess it's Octavia time.

I have to agree on the price - that's the downside of the brand becoming respected and mainstream. But it does compare OK with the competition when you find similar or better performance. Also the 1.8 petrol looks on paper to be pretty nippy and is £20k so could be an alternative.

The Tiguan for example with a 170bhp oil burner is from £23k (and I see they do a tasty 200bhp petrol also from £23k - wonder if that will ever make it over to the Yeti?).

I did look at the 1,8 price, but the VED really puts me off it, it's in group J, which is currently £215 pa & the fuel economy is absolutely atrocious...

I didn't think the fuel figures were too bad for the 1.8.

28mpg Urban, 40.9 extra urban and 35.3 combined (so in real world terms that's probably going to give around 31 average).

Compare that to the 170hp TSI Tiguan, which has the following figures:

23.3 Urban, 39.8 extra urban and 31.7 combined (so average around 27)

Also CO2 figures of 189 compared to 213 for Tiguan, although that only equates to a one band difference for road tax  (scarely, from 2010 the first year car tax will be £425 Yeti and £550 Tiguan - see here Changes to Vehicle Tax from April 2010 : Directgov - Motoring)
