Noisy Speedo (Cable?)

Featured Replies

Since taking the dash apart a few times and reassembling it my speedo is really noisy (to the point of drowning out almost everything else!). From what I've read on here it could be something to do with the cable, but I can't for the life of me understand why the cable would make such a racket?

From the looks of it there is no way to incorrectly insert a square cable into a square hole in the speedo so I assume it hasn't gone together incorrectly?

Any suggestions as to how to fix this welcomed, or failing that offers of a new cable would be lovely :D

Is it routed as it was before to the back of the dash? You haven't re-routed it with an extra bend or anything?

No extra bends as far as I'm aware. The cable is clipped in the same place under the bonnet and exits straight through the bulkhead from the speedo AFAIK?

Is it screwed on at the speedo firmly and does the speedo work as expected? I would probably try give it a tug where it exits the bulkhead in the enginebay, and maybe undo it at the gearbox end, try straighten it out, and try spinning the cable inside to see if the sound can be recreated.

Hi ,

Disconnect the cable from gearbox end and spend 20 minutes running some oil down into the cable. Its amazing how a bit of oil can cure a ticking speedo cable

Thanks. Will give this a go as mine is very noisy and the speado keep sticking at zero when it's not been used for a couple of days until I bang on the dash! Out of interest what mileage is on your car? Mine has done 84,000 now so just curious as to when yours has started.
