noisy power steering?

Featured Replies

Hi Everybody

I bought a '98 Felicia 1.6 Estate last week, what a great car its turning out to be, and a real bargain too. I've replaced the exhaust centre section, and tomorrow plan to tackle the rusty rear shocks, so as to get a new MoT on it.

However, now the blowing exhaust is quietened there is a noticeable whining noise from the offside of the engine, in the vicinity of the alternator belt, which I assume also powers the power steering pump?

Is this something that other Felicia owners have had trouble with?

Is possibly just a matter of adjusting the belt or it it more likely to be a problem with the power steering pump ?

kind regards

Dave

Hi Dave

Ive had this problem on a hyundai lantra before and it turned out to be leaking PS fluid (which is actually automatic gearbox oil) from the pipe to the pump. Once I topped it back up the noise stopped :)

Thanks Steve

I can't see a leak but the fluid dipstick level is on minimum so I'll top it up to see if that cures the problem

many thanks

Dave:)

Hi Dave

If fill it up and still have noise you may have to change the ps pump because i had the same problem

I hope I don't have to replace it, but topping up doesn't have seemed to change anything, it needed very little fluid.

I'm wondering if flushing it out and changing the fluid might help, or some additive?

The car is steering ok, just the moaning noise is getting on my nerves, it sounds like a milkfloat!

cheers

Dave

flic makes a whine like that but only when steering lock is on, other than that shes fine. i always assumed it was summit to do with pressure building up as steering hit full lock.... i'm not 100% tho
