Tappety Engine

Featured Replies

Hi

I started the VRS up today and notice the engine making a very loud tappety sound. Drove it around the block and after it had warmed up it was fine, the engine sounded alot quieter. Checked the oil and the level was fine, only serviced 4k ago.

Any ideas as to what it could be? Also the engine tends to shudder quite a bit too. Its an 05 VRS with 50k on the clock. Hope its nothing serious.

Any ideas? Any help much appreciated.

Cheers

James

check that the correct grade oil was used on the service ( see sticky at start of forum ) :)

+1 505.01 spec oil must always be used in the PD engines. Using the wrong oil, results in camshaft lobe wear, the lobes that drive the rockers for the PD injectors. Crazy loads on those parts due to the pressure inside the injectors.

I have noticed a difference in engine tone in certain weather conditions though. My engine doesn't seem to like hot weather as much as colder weather.

Yeah mine seems alot louder/rougher when its hot outside. Luckily that doesn't happen too often here lol

Well i serviced the engine myself and definately used the 505.01 spec oil. IIRC it was Comma oil that i used.
