Paying to much for the 1.8 TSI?

I may be wrong but I seem to recall that turbo engines are not suitable for LPG. It was a few years ago I heard that so I don't know if it still holds true.

I do know that in Europe the Octavia 1.6 MPi is the only version availbale LPG from the factory so it may still be true.

The other point is it would be a very, very small LPG tank if it replaced one of the Yeti's fuel tanks.

These are the only ones that I could find quickly, I should not think that the trends would be too far out though.

If its LPG your interested in why not start chasing some of the better LPG installation garages for some thoughts and costs, maybe joining an LPG type website. Their are some very innovative solutions to many LPG problems and their are some very sophisticated systems on the market. You could most probably replace both tanks with LPG and just have a very small petrol tank for starting etc. After the initial purchasing cost the system would be ££ cheaper to run on with less ware and damage to your engine for short journeys. Environmental benefits too

In terms of replacing the Yeti's fuel tanks a lot depends on their size and shape. A lot of modern fuel tanks are wird sdhapes to fit around other components so a LPG tnak may not fit. Of course if you have a Yeti with no spare you could probably put a dougnut tank in the boot where the wheel would go.

The pub bragging 'peak' figure maybe but it provides 190lb/ft for over 3000rpm of the rev range as opposed to the 170's ability to hold it for just 1000rpm. :p

Balancing the arguement up however, I do ask myself if Barsteward has actually driven a CR170 yeti as, from experince, they are not how he describes imo.

I was simply giving my point of view as to my decision process, we're all diferent thats why there's so much choice in the yeti range.

For information I have owned two Diesels in the past a Citroen Mk2 AX 1.5, and a Citroen Xantia 1.9 Turbo and my Misses had a Seat 1.9 TDI 100 Ibiza, of course progress has been made in some areas of diesal technology in the interim years.

I had a Fabia with the PD100 and was close to astounded by the CR140 Yeti I tried. While it lacked the sudden "wumph" of power of the PD100 it felt quicker at any speed (which it probably was), smoother and so, so much quieter too. The CR170 (which I've ordered, having tried that engine in an Octy) is just more of the same.

Thanks for the positive info; I hadn't researched it because it just came to me while I was firing up the PC; it wont be this years job anyway, the boss has decided I have to have another people carrier this time around so it will have to wait until at least next year :doh:emoticon-0106-crying.gif.

I will keep an eye out for the Haynes manual and sneak a peek to see what shape the fuel tank is, you can get custom shaped tanks made but the cost a bit!! The small petrol/big LPG tank is a useful idea, I would only need 2 gallons for my current weekly mileage, 4 if I get sent on the longer school run, out to the villages; it is the long weekend runs that drink the fuel, down to London or over to France during the summer and during ski season (when the Doc says it is safe for me to ski again - if ever).

Having read the post on the fuel supply problem I was surprised that the fuel is supplied from two totally separate tanks. Not had a proper look underneath but I would have thought a 'saddle' tank would have used, like in the good old days of Rapids and Estelle's and I was fairly convinced that's what my Golf had as well.

Maybe if JonA picks up this post he might be able to enlighten us.

Hi Lee,

I am too tired at the mo' to go back and look up the figures ( They are on a Czech site with lots of pictures - including the torque and hp curves for al the engines), but here goes from memory:

1. The 170 CP never even goes down as low as 190 Nm in torque, so from the idle to 5000 rpm, superior to the 1,8 Petrol.

2. Having spent now 2 days on the bahn, I can tell you that 106 mph at 3000 rpm is VERY comfortable, and the reaction to right foot pressure is to shove that little Bimmer in front out of the way.

3. I was wrong abaout 6th being "overdrive" - it aint. from 3000 rpm, it just keep on coming - like the energizer bunny, if you know that one.

4. The rated top speed of 201 km - 125 mph just happens if you put you foot down - no waiting and building up slowly, like in the Octy/PD. At that velocity, I am too damn busy watching the road to look at rpm but it would seem to keep going just some more - alas somebody keeps getting in the way......

5. On the 'bahn, no problem keeping up. Cayennes, Tiguans, Touaregs stay in the middle lane. Kugas, Foresters and various LR derivatives are all the way in the near lane. Real Porsches don't drve in this winter weather! Only company in the fast lane are other VAG 2.0 and much larger Petrol engines.Mostly Audi A4/6 Estates and Passat Estates - probably road warriors on the way to the next sale.

6. Not seen a single other SM Yet.

7. 6th works very well from 90 km/hr and up - no need at all to switch down. That is more than ample power from 1600 rpm and up to max. No fuss, no noise till around 180 km/hr, where you can hear the wind and a little growl.

Very poised at speed, and I am impressed at how the tyres work on dry road.

On a little funnye note, The DRL's seem to look funny, but it does not take long for the "obstruction" to see them becaused of their high position - and get out of the way.

Ahhhh.... The pet names for pristinely white 170 hp SM's keep expanding.

We have had Snowwhite, Now the Geat White (as in shark), mabe the White Tornado - from the cleaner commercials.

Any more good ones?

BTW, White seems to be getting to be popular in Germany - replacing silver and black.
