Peoples opinions of GAP insurance

Featured Replies

Gents,

What are peoples opinions of GAP insurance? I am considering it with my new purchase and wonder if it is worth it. Has anybody had it and recommend it (or had payouts?)

Who do people recommend?

Thanks

I wouldn't bother , personally.

If you are "lucky" you'll write your car off after two and a half years and do very nicely out of it but most insurance companies will give you a new vehicle if it happens in the first year anyway.

I'm more than happy to take my chances as very few cars get written off and even if it did happen to mine the claim should still give me enough to replace it with something of a similar age and mileage.

When I had my Toledo I paid 5k for it and 6 weeks later the car got written off. Insurance company came back with 3.2k to start with :( Eventually got back 4.1K after excess and couldn't believe I lost £800 in 6 weekish :(

Sounds like you were unlucky. I had it the first time around but haven't bothered since. I think it was about £299 which, this time around is a lot of Autoglym or Meguiars or....

If you do want it, do a bit of googling - I'm pretty sure you will find it online for a LOT less than the stealers will want to charge you

£98 online for 3 yrs cover which I didn't think was too bad

Sister in law was crashed into and front and rear taken clean off by a truck.

After fighting she got back 2/3 of what she owed on HP, and the GAP topped it up back to invoice, so she was left with a deposit for her current car.

Some here have also had similar experiences, so gets my vote.

Although I paid "cash" for my vRS I have taken out GAP insurance.

I was offered a good deal - cannot honestly remember the exact price, but it really wasn't much for 3 years cover.

If I'm unfortunate enough to write my car off within 3 years I know nsurance will not pay me back what I paid for the car, however the GAP insurance will do.

As with all insurance it's a gamble.

Pay it, nothing happens and you might as well have thrown the money down the drain.

Pay it and have to make a claim - well you're quids in.

Out of interest how much were the dealers wanting for the same cover?
