VRS 170 CR Hatch - Parking Sensor Fitting

Featured Replies

Shortly going to have my grubby mitts on a new Octy II VRS and want to fit parking sensors to the rear and possibly the front.

Having done this to a Punto in the past and had that sphincter moment when putting the drill to the pfor the first time, I'd like to minimise and risk of making a hash of it and was wondering if anybody out there could provide advice, pictures etc of where on the bumper to fit the sensors, what cable path and connections to the rear light clusters etc. Also has anybody done front ones? Was going to use two seperatr systems as they are cheap and it would save running the wiring down the length of the car.

Lost of posts on this but nobody has done the detail with regards to measuring / positioning etc.

Was wondering if its easier to remove the bumper?

Cheers

Tony

why not just spec it onto the car from the dealers?

It is very easy to remove bumpers which would make life easy though.

A while ago I researched parking sensors, as I was buying second hand & couldn't be sure of spec, & I came across electromagnetic systems which fit behind the bumper & therefore no drilling!

Have a look here; No Holes Parking Sensor | Parking Dynamics Reverse Sensor

Also have search for Talon. He's from Russia and did an excellent post on fitting the fronts which may be of use to you.

cause its currently at Motorpoint in Peterborough waiting for September 1st. Didn't get any choice over spec.......

Tried em in the past and basically they don't work very well.

Motorpoint do them as part of their Argon & Xenon packs.

Taking the rear bumper off is a bit of a job to be honest (It's easy, but it's not quick). You've to take the light clusters and the boot lining off to get at all the bolts. There's a set of instructions for fitting a towbar to an Octavia that I found on this forum when I was doing that job that goes into detail on the bumper removal process. I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter that much where the sensors are fitted provided the end ones are near the corners of the bumper at each side and the rest are evenly spread on the bumper.

I can take a few measurements off my car if you want to find the OEM positions.

If you're fitting the OEM ones (Or replacing them as I'm going to be doing this week hopefully if the replacement sensors arrive) they are pushed into clips stuck around the holes on the inside of the bumper rather than pushed in from outside, so you need access to the back of the bumper to fit them. Also my back bumper doesn't have a cut out in the centre for taking the wires out through - I made a smaller cutout for the towbar when I fitted that, but the OEM bumper has no access without at least undoing the torx head bolts along the bottom of the bumper.

I didn't realise they didn't all have the cut-out in there - it would have been much harder without! I wonder whether it's just on the vRS bumper - my car has never had a towbar fitted as far as I'm aware.

If the towbar was fitted and removed before you bought the car, make sure there's a steel bumper running across the back of the car inside the plastic bumper (Just look into the hole in the bumper). This is removed to fit the towbar (Which has its own similar structure) and must be refitted for crash safety if the towbar is removed.

I've just fitted after-market sensors to my vRS. I marked the bumper with masking tape etc to get the positioning and 'aesthetics' right, but when I took the bumper off, I found pre-marked positions on the inside for sensors.

The kit that I bought came with a hole cutting drill which I used for drilling a pilot hole only from the inside and then cut the full size hole from the outside of the bumper to minimise chances of damage/paint lifting etc.

The sensors look OK for after-market jobs (see photo), but can anyone help me find the correct reversing light wire to hook the sensors to (red wire). I have connected the black wire to the earthing point behind the boot carpet (rear passenger side). The rear light connector unit has 5 cables: black/white trace, white/black trace, blue/white trace, black with blue trace and brown.

I am really enjoying the vRS. It's my first after a Toyota Avensis, and I am well impressed with the build quality, and I think that is saying something after the Toyo.

PS This is my first post so if it's rubbish, be gentle.

Cheers

Very nice job - that fit looks completely OEM. I've done a quick web search and can't find details of what wire is the reverse light :(... You'll probably have to probe the connections individually with a multimeter to find out. If you're stuck for a multimeter I'll check on my car if you want.

I fitted aftermarket ones to SWMBO's Focus C-MAX

I found them to have a much slower response time than my factory fitted ones on the VRS

quite annoying really

I fitted the same to my Leon II FR and had trouble identifying the correct cable with my multimeter. I eventually discovered that the boot needed to be closed for the voltage to be present at the reversing light. This maybe something to look out for. HTH

can anyone help me find the correct reversing light wire to hook the sensors to (red wire).

Look at the link I posted above - the connection details are all in there.

Thanks Psycholist, Guinness has posted previously suggesting that the reversing lead is blue/black. I have a meter, so I'll check this cable out to begin with, and if I can't sort it I'll ask for some help.

Still waiting for that "how to" on the front ones.....!!! :)

With regard to slow response - I've fitted two different cheap - £20 eBay jobbies to other cars and they work fine.
