SORTED: Screenwash collecting in spare wheel compartment

Featured Replies

I solved the problem of screenwash collecting in my spare wheel compartment, with the valuable help of all who replied. Here's how:

The problem was that the supply pipe to the rear window washer had popped out of a connector behind the trim, underneath the CD changer, on the near side of the luggage compartment. (Mine's an estate car.) The washer fluid was jetting out straight onto the electrical connector blocks for the rear lights and other components! From there it was falling into a shallow space behind a raised flange, and staying there...until the space filled up, at which point it would overflow into the luggage compartment and down into the spare wheel compartment.

Before I repaired the connection I blew through the downstream pipe to check it wasn't blocked. I reconnected the pipes (just a push fit and a "click"), and reinforced the junction with a very small cable tie. Before I put the trim back I checked that the washer was working OK. Getting the trim on and off is a pain and I didn't want to have to take it all off again.

So now, thanks to the forum, I now have a rear window washer that works, a dry spare wheel, and a fighting chance of not blowing the fuses on the lights. And who knows, maybe it will also cure the occasional unexplained warning light on the dash!

Thanks to all.
