For those interested the Yeti spare is not a spacesaver but a small full size wheel; going by this image.

When I went to view the Yeti the other week, I asked about the spare and was told it would be full size.

Speed rating is a safety issue because you have a different and smaller amount of rubber on the road plus, if you have 17s, you'll have a different sidewall profile and thus amount of flex in the tyre; both these will upset the handling balance of the car.

Good though that it is a 'full size' spare as opposed to a skinny 'space saver'. Getting more impressed with the Yeti all the time. :thumbup:

I wonder if it depends on if the Yeti is 4 or 2 wheel drive? Maybe the 2 wheel drive ones get a full size spare and the 4 wheel drive gets a space saver due to the drive gubbins under the floor restricting the depth of the recess.

Don't think so. Skoda use the description of 'space saver' to describe a wheel/tyre that is smaller than otherwise fitted.

However, it is in reality a proper full size wheel tyre and not one of the nasty super skinny 'space savers'.

When to see a Yeti today TDi 4x4 could have been a Elegance with leather trim was shod with 225 17 50 Tyres. Only can of junk in the boot.. no spare. Dealer was clueless saying no spare will be offered but a space saver might be for option of £100.

I just saw a TDI 4x4 Elegance at my dealer. I checked and there was definitely a full-size spare. I even commented with the salesman that Skoda might drop it in the future to increase the boot space, which frankly I commented on being a tad small-ish for a car with SUV aspirations. Or maybe I'm just used to the Ali-Baba cave that is the Octy boot :P

Edit: just looking at the Yeti brochure. Full size 16" spare and jack are a factory-fitted option on all models (except E) for £50. There is another option, variable boot floor, listed at £135. Would be interested to know what this is... Anyone?

If you look up my snow-monster thread 'Boot Space' there is a couple of photos of the variable boot floor.

It's simply a boot floor that can be raised to a higher position to allow for concealed storage underneath

Obviously not available if you order a spare wheel as the spare effectively takes up the concealed space.

There's no wheel well in the YETI, meaning if a spare is fitted you sacrifice alot of boot space...is it worth it

As I mentioned in the iPod thread (I know it was irrelevant there!) the brochure mentions both a full-size and space-saver spare as separate options. But AFAICS even the space-saver takes up quite a bit of room.

As you say there is no well so you will lose a lot of space.. I wouldn't bother myself.

Also the variable boot floor is £135 but a spare wheel is only £50. I suspect then that ordering just a spare wheel is useless as that is literally all you get, no boot floor to go over it. So unless you want to put your boot cargo onto a bare tyre you will need to buy both £185 for a spare tyre... ouch!

There is a shallow recess for the spare; covered over by a polystyrene insert under the boot carpet on cars without a spare.

Those fitted with the spare have a carpeted board cover with fold-over side pieces to allow access to the storage boxes surrounding the spare. Boot floor is at the same height as the variable floor option in it's upper position ie just below the door sill.

There is no spacesaver option in the true sense on the Yeti, just a 16" rim fitted with a 185/60/16 tyre and speed limited to 50mph. So not full size but better than a skinny tyre.

Again have a look at 'boot space' for other photos.

This I don't get, are you saying you get a spare wheel and false floor for £50 or you can just buy the false floor (ie variable floor) for £135 - that doesn't make sense.

I still think that the cars you have seen with a spare, the dealer/factory have included the variable floor option too as obviously it would look terrible with just a wheel and some foam lying around in the boot.

I would bet money you will need both.

My theory in ordering the spare wheel option (in addition to having a spare wheel!) is that there is some limited storage space under the floor around the wheel where all the stuff that would otherwise collect in the boot can be stored (like tools, cloths, emergency seat covers, removable tow-bar etc).

Spare wheel seems a bargain, but it messes up the load-space imo, even if you take it out!

I decided not to order. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

The brochure mentions both a standard spare and a space-saver spare although there's only one on the current price list (not sure which of the two this refers to).

But given that the spare will sit inside its own compartment, I don't imagine that Skoda will have sized two different compartments of different height (or will they?).

I think you'll find that 'standard' and 'space saver' are in reality one and the same. i.e. the 16" rim with a 185/60 tyre is 'standard' to the E and S spec cars but 'space saver' to the SE and Elegance as these having 17" wheels as OE spec.

Having looked at a Yeti yesterday and particularly the boot IMHO the 16" spare with Variable floor is a good every day solution without restricting boot space too much. If even you want total load carrying capability you will be removing the rear seats so not too much extra to remove the variable floor as well.

Mind you, it might be a workable option to get a 'skinny space saver' spare, cover it and then carry it vertically tied to the side of the wheel arch or even in the shallow well and just have a slightly raised boot floor. Food for thought.

When we were speccing our Yeti yesterday, we originally had both spare and variable boot floor on our list, but the dealer advised us not to bother with the latter as with the spare, the boot floor is effectively the same level as the variable floor in a Yeti without a spare, so there is little to gain in having it. The one they had in the showroom had a spare and there was still storage space either side of it under the floor. And thanks to the previous posts, I now understand why there was what looked like a full-size spare but with a speed rating sticker!
