Airbags

Featured Replies

I want to use a seat cover but I have side impact airbags in the front seats . I want to modify it but I am not sure where it breaks thro' the seat - is it where there is a little oval leather patch ? ...

Don't even think of doing it. The existing seat covering is carefully designed and tested to allow the side airbag to inflate at the correct rate and in the correct manner. If you put a cover over the seat which impedes that inflation in any way, you could be putting your life or that of the passenger at risk. I will try and find an American site which explains exactly what goes into designing covers for seats with airbags.

PS I'm assuming you want to fit a cover which goes around the side of the seat, and not a plush lambskin cover which just covers the seat bolster and backrest...

thanx Denis ... I have the carrot curry coloured seats - no option initially when I bought - maybe I'll use it only when I take the car for a service then - the only time they ever get marked !

I notice that some garages protect the seats with strong cotton or similar seat covers while cars are with them for servicing. I shudder to think what a side airbag would do if it operated within the confines of such a cover. Being pushed forward by an airbag inflating behind one's back in the event of an accident could be one thrill too many! eek.gif
