How to..............

.........get my wheels refurbed, when the car is needed on a daily basis??

I see from the multiple threads that quite a few members have had their alloys refurbished or changed the colour, but what did you all do about using the car? leave it on blocks and walk everywhere? find an establishment that can offer a 'while you wait service'? or use a spare set of wheels during the process?

I'm guessing the latter opition is probably easiest, but where can I get a set of cheapo' steels as a stop gap?

Sorry for all the questions......:o

By the way, I thinking of having the 18" Zeniths diamond cut, any thoughts?

further info.......

Place near me will put your car on axle stands in the factory whilst the wheels are refurbed. Does a full tyre strip & refit + balance in the price too. :)

I think you'll struggle to get Zeniths diamond cut due to their design. They might do them but for a price.

The place I used, I took my car into for 9, they took the wheels off and did them and gave me a call at 15:30 to say come and pick it up. £220 inc taking the wheels off the car, stripping the tyres, re-fitting the tyres and balancing and refitting the wheels to the car.

For future though, I've got a set of winter wheels I can just put on temporarily.

Thanks for that, have yours been sprayed an alternative colour or just refurbished?

I was thinking about the black chrome effect, not chrome as such but highly polished.

Mine were re-powder coated in a gunmetal colour. The paint is wheelpaints.co.uk anthracite powder, which is quite light as anthracite goes anyway and it was applied carefully to look as light and glossy as possible, thus I call them gunmetal.

Another shot..

Might not affect you with the finish you are after, but when pricing up check whether the finish you are getting is a paint job or a powder coat, as there's likely to be a difference in cost.

I got a brand new set 18" Zeniths (came with 17's), so didn't have a problem over losing the vehicle.

Like wega3k, I'll probably keep the 17's for winter use, or to put back on if I sell the car in the future, but there are certainly no plans for that at the moment.

When I had mine done I just hung around for the day (after taking a sickie ;)).

I started with a long brekkie in a cafe, luckily the sun was shining, there was a big park nearby and I had a good book and a copy of Autocar, so I was alright :)

You could do one wheel at a time though and use the spare? I nearly ended up doing that :o

Another thing I learnt is your choice of finish will be dictated by where you have it done and their experience. Somewhere like lap-tab will be able to do nearly any finish to a high standard, but it will cost a bit more.

I had mine done in hi-power silver initially but neither me nor the guy were happy with the finish (orange peel on some of the surfaces). He said this was at least in part due to the design of the spokes on the Zeniths. He showed me a set of RS wheels he'd just done in the same colour (flat faced spokes) and they looked perfect. Another place (like lap-tab) might well be able to do hi-power silver and hyper silver / hyper black on Zeniths no problem. He re-did them for free in the current colour which I'm delighted with.

BTW, to give you an idea, here's my car with the hi-power silver zeniths on...

Apart from the orange peel problem the hi-power silver looked awesome (photos really don't do it justice). Hard to keep clean though.

If you don't mind it looking a bit odd for a few days and if you need to use the car, you could just risk doing one at a time and using the spare wheel in it's place while each wheel is being done.

I've already said that

You could hire a car for the day?

...or if you've any holidays coming up, leave it with the wheel place and blag a lift to the airport!

Wega3k, don't forget to mention that original wheels may dent but don't chip - can you see where this thread is going :ignore:

That doesn't take away from how good they do look though.......

Smart Alec! :) Anyway, there's an update on that tale of woe. I called him up and... he didn't get the email. :orb_phew:

Does that mean you're going to be bringing a {slightly} imperfect car to Mansfield - again?

Yup, he's redoing it a week on Monday + one of my winter wheels.

Think I prefer the standard ones but each to their own..
