Bouncing or pulsing Drivers Xenon?

Featured Replies

SWMBO followed me the other night and it seemed the xenon on the drivers side was either bouncing or pulsing brighter. It seems we've found why drivers keep flashing SWMBO at night.

We went down a bumpy country road on way between in-laws and our home (most direct route) and as it was empty we slowed down. I flicked my mirror to night driving so I could see the spots of the xenon bulbs better than glare.

I really couldnt tell if the drivers xenon was bouncing or drawing more power. It did appear it was drawing more as the passenger side appeared to dim quite noticably. Of course this could be eyes playing tricks.

We got home and I tried bouncing the car on the drive, but they seemed to move together and fine for brightness. Also tried revving engine (couldnt do much as was nearly 11pm and neighbours would have been mad) but they seemed to brighten slightly together and dim together.

Has anyone else has similar? Am off in a weeks time so we'll get the dealer to check, so will be going in. BUT the car will have been in 6 times then for xenon checks due to drivers flashing as the car passes them!!!!

I've had the halogens have a slight dim/brighten on the revs, but nothing significant and only noticeable if you're pulling right up and parking by a wall or fence etc.

@Gadgetman, have your light units been out of the rails (to change bulbs?).

The unit can be incorrectly fitted in the rails.

The rails that hold the light clusters (units) can be loose too.

I would try to take out a unit and see if the rails are tight and than try to put them back in correctly.

A bit of juddering can be seen, but not that much that it would blind uncomming traffic.

Light have never been removed by me, nor dealer AFAIK.

Thinking about it, I wonder if it could be the bar that flat beams the lights? Either way it's under warranty, but just wondering if anyone else had had similar.

Check that the range control motor is located correctly. If it's not the light can bounce up and down a little and it can be mistaken for a flash.

I've just been driving in front of a Mk II and the driver side looks brighter. I think it's just the viewing angle.

I've just been driving in front of a Mk II and the driver side looks brighter. I think it's just the viewing angle.

Thats what I thought too, but the road was fairly flat and straight. So my viewing angle was more or less the same for about a mile.

a vagcom xenon set up reset could possibly cure it..

I had the same issue with my aftermarket xenons.I had an 85 Ah battery installed and every was perfect. The oem battery was only 44Ah.

If the adjustment on the driver's side is set a bit too high you could be getting the edge of the beam cutoff just fluctuating up and down on small bumps (normal movement, not large movement) so it looks like it is flashing (you get a change in colour too, because of the projector lens acting like a prism).

I had a lot of trouble getting my xenons aimed low enough, but my dealer has finally got it about right now (almost too low if anything, but I don't want them to have another go in case they raise it up too high again).

No, one moment all's fine, next the R/H one is too bright/blinding.

UPDATE

Well parked infont of a restaurant yesterday, the RH one is too bright. Thinking it needs tilting left a bit.

When doing left/right adjustment do I still need to set them to learn mode with VCDS?

Also noticed that other VAG cars seem to have the RH Xenon appear brighter (Passats, new golf). Is it headlamp design, or crap allignment values issued by VAG?
