Forgot to mention...

so am i thinking its best to go for a Dealer sale @ around 7-8k with full SH @ around 40k on the clock if i was going to be keeping it for 3 years?

all the prices vary that ive seen. some as low as 5 some as high as 10 just not sure which would be a better buy for me, need a reliable car thats going to last the 3 years.

Ste0803

paid £6500 at a garage for a 05 plate black vrs with 26,000miles bargin!

in january with fssh and parrot bluetooth, 1 owner etc

When did you buy it?

End of May.

Was up for £7500 but knocked the dealer down to £7200. When he said he wouldn't budge I got up and went for the door, he soon changed his tune!

I've now got a choice between two vrs's in black

1) 55 plate, 33,000 miles from a car supermarket kind of place going for £7150

2) 55 plate 49,000 miles from a Skoda garage, heated seats and cruise control, parts and labour warranty for a year, and hopefully get a cambelt change in the price for £7290

I'll get a better package by buying from Skoda but I'm worried about it having more mileage, should I worry about 16k miles more?

Cheers,

Stan

A few more miles is irrelevant as far as a PD engine goes. I'd go for the main dealer option, if they wont budge on the price insist on a new cambelt as its about 4 years old and due. Try for a couple more extras like full tank of diesel, years tax etc. and check the car thoroughly for any defects, even down to the tyres.

As other recent VRS buyers have said prices are quite high at the momentdue to no replacement VRS in the Fabia range, general motoring costs.

Hope you get what you want.

I'm not the best mechanically with cars, although I think having the parts and labour warranty will put me at ease. Still abit worried about the mileage though for the money I'm spending.

I think after having cars from peugeot, citroen and renault, VAG cars are, from what I've read, in a different league, in terms of build quality anyway.

I'm going to have to learn how to drive the Vrs though after driving a clio 182 which is a totally different drive.

Cheers,

Stan

Why are you changing from the Fast Clio to a VRS?

  • Author

Insurance, tax and fuel are expensive and want to be saving money for my own place.

The clio is a great car and is fast but only when you are really going for it and before you know it, your doing silly speeds and therefore using lots of fuel. I'll miss being able to go round corners like its on rails but I'm sure some suspension mods will sort that out:D

With the Vrs, the power is alot lower down in the revs and so won't have to push it so much to the power. The build quality will be better and it will be a much smoother drive as I want a relaxing car to drive.

Do you think I should stay with the clio?

Cheers,

Stan

Driven a Clio172 on a track day and loved it but as an everyday car I'll agree with you.

As you say the VRS is more comfy drive, a bit of power and cheaper to run. You'll find with these small modern turbo diesel hatches, you need to change gear more to keep it in the power band. Hope you've driven one a bit to see if you like it.

Once you've been on this forum a while you'll be modding it, and before you know it up to your old Clio's power.

I think I'll start off with cosmetic mods like colour coded grille and splitter but prob will get a remap at some point, better upgrade up to 312mm brakes first though!

I think I will enjoy having a stealth car too! Having a racing blue 182 with the twin pipes means alot of attention from people tailgaiting and them expecting me to give them a race all the time.

As soon as I've got the Vrs, you'll see me on here with pics and any mods I do.

Thanks for your input Soot1e,

Cheers,

Stan

Aha! You've started modding already and haven't got the car yet. Told you!

Well

I am now the proud owner of a Golf TDi SE 2003. 130k on the clock, nearly full service history (but a pile of receipts for bits and pieces)

2500 from the local auctions.

My mechanic mate was livid that I was going to spend 6k on a 4 year old car and dragged me back down the auctions. 8th car to go through, a good once over, half a dozen interested dealers, three who enquired about my pocket depth and weren't interested in getting involved in a bidding war after I said whatever it costs.

Can't fault the car at the moment, drives well, stops well, goes well, clean, appears well taken care of.

Changing the belts, water pump and giving it a service at a friends garage tomorrow. Fingers crossed it provides me with a year or so of cheapish motoring.

Quirrel mate,

no Vrs then! what spec is this Golf? How much bhp? Sounds like a good price anyway even with the mileage.

Hope you don't regret it. Really thought you had your heart set on a Vrs?

Stan

I still do, but it's throwing 6k at a car that is going to do 80 miles + a day.

No matter what way I look at it, I can;t justify it.

Once the belts etc are done the golf will stand me just under 3k on the nose. As long as it does a years service I can chop it back in and get myself an vRS SE at sensible prices.

Golf is '03 SE spec Red I on it, so I presume 110 or 100.

  • Author

I supose if your doing 80miles+ a day then the Golf is a good option for the time being. But make sure you do get a Vrs SE in a years time!

I think I'll get an SE in a year or two when they aren't 10k!

Stan

That's the conclusion I came to.

Even though I saw several high mileage vRS's out there, I wasn't happy that in 2 years or so when I would put mine up for sale that there would still be that much interest and that people would want a 6 or 7 year old car with 100k on the clock.

Whereas the Golf I can put another 40k on the clock and in theory sell it for nearly the same as long as I keep the service up.

passatnomore i work for chathams in edinburgh and just done looked at urs the other week its still ther had the 4 new tyres done and its a nice car m8, spoiler still needs bonded on tho lol. no sure exactly hoe much its goin for now tho.

I went from a Mk1 Clio 172 to a vRS. That was over 3 years ago and have never regretted it. I still look forward to driving the vRS everyday. Although it's not a quicker car, the vRS "feels" like it's a lot quicker.
