Juddering rear wiper blade

Featured Replies

Octy 2 estate - 19K miles

The rear wiper blade wipes fine in the initial direction but on return judders across the glass leaving radial lines of water and makes an annoying noise.

Its been doing it for some weeks but I was unable to ignore anymore on a long trip in the pouring rain yesterday ( to have a look at a bongo - but thats another story).

Will wiping the blade itself with something (white spirit for instance) cure it do you think or do I need to get a new blade ?

Try popping it on the other way around and see it that works first.

I certainly wouldn't put white spirit anywhere near a window. Try a quality car glass cleaner first and if that doesn't work, vinegar.

Examine the wiper carefully and closely to see which way it judders. It judders because the blade is leaning too far over to be flipped when it moves. Wrap the whole works --blade arm the lot in an old towel and grip the whole works with both hands and give it a gentle but firm twist in the required direction so that it gets the right idea when it moves.

You may have to do it more than once or even undo some twist if you overdo it.

This will work but takes an acquired knack.

Thanks. i'll give those suggestions a go tomorrow.

I have this problem too, I'll try the suggestion(s) myself and report back...

This is exactly the solution. I've fixed a number of juddery blades using this method.

Turned the rubber blade around.

Managed to get a plastic end off with a small screw driver and pulled the rubber blade out . Turned it round and pulled it back the other way with washing-up liquid as lubrication. Popped the end back on and hey presto it works without any judders.:D

Usually a sign that a new blade is required! Turning it may stop it for a time.

12 months is a fair age for a piece of rubber left out in the air/sun, how old is yours?

You can easily get the whole wiper off by sliding down the peice of plastic at the end of the arm, and then rotate the blade 180 degress and re clip on, no need to remove the rubber...

Really. oh bugger.

Isn't it a lot easier to just go & buy a new wiper blade?

If all else fails . . . Clean the window / wiper blade with white vinegar , gets rid of any grease / crap that might be causing it to judder

Not for me it isnt. Its 10 miles to the nearest Skoda dealer, plus its always 2 trips because hardly anything is kept in stock.

And why buy one when this fix seems to be working OK. Plus Id still have to attach the new one anyway.

Im being a bit thick here but could you explain in a little more detail.

Jules - how awful 10 miles to a dealer, god that must be lioke living in the outback. 10 miles, nearly a lifetime to travel that!

Ever considered buying consumables (like a wiper blade) from a car parts shop? Cheaper and the same (maybe even OEM if the same maker - like Bosch, Valeo etc). You nver know there might even be one in the remote rural area you live in.

10 miles - I am still ill from laughing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS Jules - try the handbook - it shows how to remove wiper blades. Amazing little things these handbooks, though it seem sno one ever bothers to read them?

Nice to see some straight talking commonsense.Wiper blades are consumeable items, they are hardened by the summer sun and damaged by frost and ice in the winter, average life 1 to two years in my experience.Just replace them, there are plenty of sources, Skoda is the last place I'd go.

Pull the end peice of the arm, as if pulling it off - it will snap into the "open" position after about 6mm of movement, you can then remove the blade assembly. Then just push the end peice back to lock the blade on.

buy a new one. only about £5.

Can you get things like wipers from car parts places then ?;)

Dealerships and car-parts places both have their pros and cons. I regularly use both.

I must it didnt occur to me to check the manual for wiper blade servicing. Next you'll be telling there is other useful stuff in the manual like changing the oil & filter :D

OK I know 10 miles is not far but I couldnt see the point of going to get a new one (which the dealer probably didnt stock) when its now working fine. I just could have done it more easily seemingly though. I'll get one next time im passing that way - even old scrooge here find a few quid for a new wiper. In fact I'm not at work next monday so ill get one then, hows that.

Though its a pity they dont do on-line spares . That could save me even more miles.
