Octavia Gearknob

Featured Replies

Hi there

I want a new OEM gearknob for my '05 Octavia II Elegance as the chrome on the old one is flaking off. Someone said that it was a dealer fit only, is this true? If not then how do you remove/fit them?

Thanks

Pull the leather boot up and you will see the retaining clip at the top, just remove this with a screwdriver. The new one will come with a new clip on it.

You can just replace the chrome piece, I think? I had a bubble in my one and this was replaced under warranty and as far as I know they just replaced the chrome plate.

Lozparry is right - just replace the chromed plastic piece which costs £8 odd and is easy to prise off and replace. A new gearknob and gaiter (I was told it comes as one complete item) is £50+ dependant on VIN, and is more involved to fit.

1Z0798001 for a five speed 1Z0798002 for a six speed, these are the part numbers for just the chrome piece,a minute job to replace, retails at around € 6.27

Hi, i don't think you can replace just the chrome piece on mine, I will check, however I have just purchased a brand new gearknob for it anyway, however the person I bought it off said that it requires a special tool to remove the old one? Can anybody shed any light on this? Thanks

Maybe the tool for the one-way clips the gearknob is fastened with....

You dont need a special tool, all you need is something to cut or widen the old clip.

If you do it carefully you can even reuse it.

You could alternatively use a hoseclamp (these clamps you can tighten with a screwdriver, dont know the english name) or a big ty rap.

Oh, one thing. If you try to pull off the old gearknob, dont put your face above it. You will need a bit of power and it will come loose pretty sudden.......

Where can I buy the five speed one?

There are better options than the OE skoda item IMHO.

Mine's an Audi S-line. Fitting is just the same as all the other vag knobs - as has been said above its pretty easy to swap over. Took me only about 10 mins or so..

Jubilee Clip. Many fond memories of the damn thinks skinning knuckles on radiator hoses and the like, back in the day when DIY maintenance required a handful of spanners, a couple of screwdrivers and a handy motorist centre that was open on a Sunday because the law allowed them to.

Ahh, cruddy days.

Always were a fan of the "golf" type gearknob, ever since my dad had a VW Golf GTI from 1979, 1.6L orange color with black side stripe.

Bumbing this post a bit!

Would like to fit an Audi S-Line knob in my PFL MK2 Octavia. What do i need? Do i have to replace the leather trim aswell or just the knob-piece? Do you have any art.nr. from VAG? Thanks :)

Sorry i don't have the VAG pn.  I got both of mine from ebay, first one from germany, second one from spain i think?  cheaper than uk sellers and cheaper than the dealers at the time i got mine.

search "OEM s-line knob"  / international sellers on ebay:

On mine, both of them came with the audi gaiter which you dont need - you'll need to swap that over with the skoda gaiter - bit fiddly but not hard to do - you'll see how they're fitted together when you get the new part.  on both of mine i carefully removed the circular clip (worked it loose enought to remove with a small flat head screwdriver) then re-used this to fit the new knob.. the best tool i had to re-crimp the clip was actually a very old pair or tile cutters, worked a treat.

Been looking to see if I could change the insert only.....my chrome surround is great, but you can't read the number on the gearstick anymore (I know where the gears are though....).......I do like the look of the chromed one in bahnstromer vrs's link!!

I've got the chrome 6 speed Vrs insert in the boot of my car which I never got round to fitting! Can't decide what to do with gearknob! May end up selling the insert

Reviving an old thread. I've got an Audi knob to go on my mk2 facelift but struggling to the get the leather boot off the knob. I can see where it attaches but the black plastic just wont budge. Any tips? I was debating smashing it as the leather boot is going on the Audi one

I don't know if the VRS uses the same type of gear knob but mine (facelift) allows you to just replace the chromed plastic part so you don't need to take off the leather boot.

I fitted a new 5 speed one very easily; just lever up the old top and replace.

The supplier in the Czech  Republic initially sent me a 6 speed top. If you can use it then send me a message through Briskoda.

The part number is 5LO 798 117.

Thanks for the quick response. The VRS is the same as the one you linked but I wanted to change the whole knob for completely different one. Got an Audi S line one as i think they look better, but leather boot was different. A pair of pliers and some brute force I managed to separate the leather boot from the knob and swap it over. Looks much better now. I did like the original one but just fancied a change.
