Maxidot retrofit - a bit worried...

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've just bought a 2008 Octavia II 2.0 TDI PD DPF Elegance Estate.

Before buying I researched the model here to find out about possible problems etc.

While doing that I stumbled across some of the threads about retrofitting a Maxidot display and since I'm a sucker for gadgets I now want one... :D

I've contacted my local dealer and asked if they'd like to mount the Maxidot.

At first they said they thought it couldn't be done and they contacted the danish distributor who also said they didn't think it could be done.

However after telling him what I've read here about the operation - that they just need to follow the manual for refitting a dash - they are willing to give it a go BUT they cannot give any guarantee that it'll work afterwards.

I'm 99% confident that it WILL work, but is there *any* possibility they can mess either the display or something worse up?

The car has had a MFD2 retrofitted by the seller - will this give any problems?

What I'm probably looking for is a 100% bulletproof procedure that I can print out and hand them so I'm sure they won't hand me back a non-functioning car.

Does something like that exist?

P.S. I'm in Denmark so a recommendation to a UK dealer is not useful for me :o

Any help appreciated!

Regards,

Niels

Welcome to briskoda. I have done a few of these but don't use dealer tools and so couldn't give them a procedure to follow. Dealers seem to make auch a meal out of doing these for some reason.

Good luck getting it sorted.

The dealer just needs to follow the guided procedure for swapping the dash cluster under warranty. It does not matter that the replacement cluster is a maxidot one, and the old one a normal cluster.

You will need to give both keys to the dealer as they will need to recode the immobiliser as part of the process. You may also want to get them to sort the radio code out as this is also stored in the cluster but not transferred across to the new one.

What do you mean with "the radio code"?

Is this a code that came with the radio (MFD2) or is it something that's only stored in the existing dash?

When they perform the guided procedure for swapping the dash do they have to take into account that there's a MFD2 in the car or is that irrelevant?

The dealers will need to re enter the radio (MFD2) code once the dash insert is changed.

As stu mentioned, its the radio code that for example is prompted for if you disconnect the battery. This is stored in the cluster and is normally sent via canbus to the headunit when the power is restored, if the code is wrong or not stored then the headunit will prompt for a code which only the dealer can get.

The type of headunit makes no difference to the procedure, indeed once done you will get navigation data on the maxidot when using the MFD2 to navigate.

How many goes do you get at putting the code in before it locks?

you'll get plenty of warning before it locks and then it's only for a period of time before more are allowed.

Thank you very much all of you so far.

I've searched a danish forum and it seems there are one or two (probably more) dealers here that know how to do this, so I'll try to contact one of them tomorrow.

Just a few final questions:

1)

What happens if they don't succeed?

Is the car unable to drive - maybe even requiring expensive repair - or is it "just" a matter of inserting the old dash and then I'm good to go again?

2)

Are there any functions normally available in the Maxidot that are NOT available when retrofitting?

I ask because I don't know about all of the capabilities of the Maxidot and I've read something about a sprinkler fluid bottle with a sensor that should also be fitted.

If you know the details about this, please enlighten me :D

Thanks!

If they can't get it to work then they can just put the original one back in.
