How the heck do you change headlamp bulbs?

Featured Replies

Well i picked up a 03 plate skoda superb comfort, in metallic blue with the 1.9TDi engine

i love it

however, its 6 years old and obviously its got a few minor niggles. one is the headlamps... the bulbs appear to be mismatched and rather dim. the passenger side is a very mucky yellow colour with the drivers being a bit whiter...but both arent terribly bright. No problem i thought, ill pop the bonnet and change them...cant be too hard.

but then i looked and now im just glad i have 2 functioning bulbs.... how the faff do you get in there to change the buggers!!! theres a reservoir blocking access on one side and the air intake blocking access on the other!!!

i dont even know what bulbs to get... the car didnt come with the manual for whatever reason (tho all the other books are there). but i presume the dipped beam is the common as muck H7?

please tell me changing headlight bulbs isnt a difficult job! i have a sidelight out as well so that does need seeing to!

well

i ust went and did like a mock change and actually it pretty easy....especially the passenger side (near side)

i just went to halfords to see about bulbs but my god they are a rip off... £19.99 for a single +50% bulb? 16 for a + 30s? shocking. Looks like ill be taking my custom back to ABD.

They are easy if you know how, the secret is to unbolt the airbox if you need to change the drivers side and pull the power steering res cover off for the other side.

I'm trying this soon to try and see why moisture si building up in the driver side window. Also, the main bulb has blown. i'm ok on the passenger side - I managed to get the cover off.

It's the driver side I'm a bit worried about....I've taken the 2 screws off that cover thing (after taking the two flaps off) - that's cool. Then there is a plastic rectangular tubing that seems to channel air from the front of the engine (horizontal direction) to just behind the headlight unit (vertical direction). Now, at this point, it is still difficult to get at the headlight unit. I can see what I would like to have moved and it seems to be attached to the side of teh car with one bolt - but I was afraid I would end up loosening a whole load of stuff that I would not be able to put back together...

Thanks

syanide, you do know this thread is more than a year old? :-)

Here you go mate.

OSF - Unscrew the 3 screws on the landing panel, pull out the air duct pipe and then unbolt the airbox from the wing, you can now push the airbox over to give full access to the bulb.

When replacing the little sidelight, take off the earth wire, and use a flatblade screw driver to prise the holder out, replace bulb and refit.

NSF - Undo the PSF cap, then pull the cover off the res, you can now get at this side as well, same applies with changing them, and don't lose the backing clips or you will have a damp unit.

hth.
