Any ideas on a poorly running petrol beetle?

Featured Replies

2 litre petrol, 2001. Going to scan it tomorrow but wondered what people thought about the symptoms being described. The below is from the owner:

"but ever since we have had every now and then, not very often mind, when you start it, the revs just build up on its own accord, you give the gas some beans and it returns to normal, but the other day, it done it, but they wouldnt come back down, and when they did it sounded rough, so turned it off and went to restart it and it was vibrating all over the place and just didnt want to know, by this time the orange check light was on, turned it back off, left it for 10 mins and restarted, it went evntually check light was still on, so got it home (about 2 miles) and turned it off, left overnight, went to it next morning, no problems at all, no light, no dodgy starting, no rev builing, and all seems normal now"

Any clues would be ideal as I know more about speaking Chinese than I do about the 2 litre petrol engine. :)

MAF ...........Possibly ????

Total guess btw, lol

sounds somewhat like my diesel octavia when the coolant temp sensor went pear shaped. It was intermittant but gradually got worse.

what's the engine code jason?? drive by wire or cable throttle??

my guess would be a dodgey throttle body.. although my fabia which was rive-by-wire had a dodgy pedal sensor

could also be a aux air injection fault (if fitted)

It could be the AQY engine, we have had problems with those misfiring due to plugs/leads and coil pack. Certainly not one of VWs finest engines in my opinion, even if they did use it in the Fabia 2 litre.

Terrible engine, could be maf or air leak (split breather, broken pcv, split vacuum pipe) or coolant temp sensor, :thumbdwn:

What would you two know :rofl::rofl::rofl:

If it's the flabia 2.0 then you must be wrong about it being crap :rofl::rofl::rofl:

That's the problem, nothing wrong with the engine, it's just in the wrong car :D

ha, mine ate it's piston rings then drank it's own oil. but to be fair it did give it some pretty sturdy abuse at times

Yeh I have an idea... get shut of it!

Not the most reliable engine.

A friend at work has just got rid of hers whilst all the lights on the dash weren't lit up!

Been back to the garage countless times with all sorts of emissions problems, vacuum leaks and random engine warning lights coming on and still wasn't right so she swapped it in while the going was good for a Nissan Qashqai.

Phil

Is this the one from DW?

Hope something shows up.

fuel mix or temp sensor would be my guess. Had similar in a golf and felicia before and it was temp sensor in each sending too much or little fuel. Fine from a cold start but neither would start if they'd been running
