Err Columbus voice control without MFSW

Featured Replies

Do my eyes deceive me or has this guy got the voice control function working without a MFSW?

Have a look at the first couple of seconds when he activates voice control. maybe there's hope for FL VRs owners yet.

Very interested in this.;)

That's what my unit now does after pressing the Speaker button - all I need to do now is to wire the mic in...

Getting my OEM BT kit fitted next week (Wed), but haven't updated to ver 2660 yet. Bit scared, so might ask Alistair at Unit 18 about this at the same time. I'll let you know if we get it to work or someone beats me to it of course.

Be chuffed to bits if it works.

Another video showing voice control without MFSW but using the (i)-button

And yet another video about voice control (however this is by using MFSW in a VW Passat, but texted in English)

Given the RNS has a mic input anyway, presumable it is possible to just use the OEM mic cable (available online) and get voice control working....

Interesting...

I believe you need a different version of the bluetooth unit. If you do a search on ebay there is a "D" version of the bluetooth unit that can apparently do voice commands without the MFSW, its also an RSAP only unit IIRC.

I hope not mannyo that's the unit Stu has got me and I'm using an iPhone. Got me worried now.

From what I've read you just wire up a mic to the pins on the back of the HU, clicky clicky with VCDS & you have voice control... no need for OEM BT or MFSW. One of the threads on vwnavi - a guy has done it with an old mic from a Nokia HF kit...

I think I am getting voice control and voice dialling mixed up.

I hope so. This would mean I ould just buy a MIC and it would work

This is very interesting.....I may invest in a Columbus for my new car after all :D

I received my OEM BT kit (729D unit) from Stu yesterday so I'm interested to hear how you get on with your installation and what functionality you get with your 'D' unit and the Columbus

Yep, I'll let you know. I will bow to Ali and Ross's advice as to whether we should do the mic mod at the same time as the BT install or wait a while. Really nervous of bricking the columbus TBH

OMG & that was post #13 too!! ...are you superstitious?

Hey only joking... hope it all goes to plan!

Didn't realise that. Starting to panic now. Not too superstitious, but I don't walk under ladders. Knowing my luck I'd get hit on the head by a falling paint tin. hehe.

Can't wait till next Wed now.

If you want to use the mic of the std bt set, you will have to reroute the wires. RNS/Columbus has a mic in and a mic out. You will have to route the wires of the original mic to the mic in and than connect the bt set to the mic out.

As I dont have an original handsfree set but a parrot MKi9200 I didnt use the mic of the parrot. I took an old mic (still had some flying around of older handsfree sets) and wired it directly to the RNS.

Dont have the MFSW, so I have to push the button to activate.

This voicecontrol works perfectly, even understands commands that arent to clearly spoken.

OK, so once connected to 'mic in' (even if you don't have mic out connected to a Hands Free) this works as Voice Control with on other mods? with the std SW?

Another question here please..

If this is fitted to a car with RNS/Columbus & OEM Bluetooth but without MFSW will pressing the button allow the use of voice dialling via the BT unit?

Tried this on mine last weekend with Stu. Not much success I'm afraid.

I'm interested to know which version of unit this has worked on as mine is a factory fitted VW unit now running the latest firmware.

Yes, with the 266* fw it will work this way. Dont have the hands free unit, only the extra mic connected to the mic in.

@Hedge

Mine is an original VW unit, RNS510 with the 2660 fw. I only have to push the button and the unit will ask me what to do.

You do have to code the unit for voice control and than activate it in one of the menus.

Do you know the coding of your unit? Autoscan or something like that?

Have to go to the car to get my Eee. Got all the files on my Eee and not here.

Will post them later.

My coding etc.

Thanks for that. You mention activating it an a menu. Is that on the RNS or elsewhere?

Its on the RNS under , after the update.

Well I am running the latest firmware as per my scan. I have searched every option on the RNS in all menus hidded or otherwise and I still can't find an option for voice control.

Any ideas?
