Car Check!

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Ive started looking around for a fabia Vrs,

came across this one on piston heads BOSS PERFORMANCE UK LTD : SKODA FABIA VRS TDI PD 130

Now ive phoned up and the very shy speaking chap said it was on the v car register for having a "paint strip all over" :Yikes:

done a quick mytextcheck and its come back with "RV05RXL has multiple insurance loss records. Most serious being damage cat. D. Loss date 8-4-2009"

can anyone else shed some light on this car/information for me?!

Many thanks in advance!

TBH, I'd avoid it myself.. when you come to re-sell it the same problems will re surface.. and if the text check is right on the multiple claims point then god knows what's happened to it..

However, if you trust a mechanic friend get them, or the AA / RAC to check it out, if it's always been repaired to top notch standard then might be a bargain.

I know the standard suspension isn't exactly low, but it looks like it's riding too high at the back for me. Rear-end shunt with standard suspension fitted in error by the repairers?

Ive always been in two mind about buying a cat D car.

mabye il get the AA to check it out. as you said, could be a bargin!

It is advertised below market value but I'd want it even cheaper. Have a look around it and drive it, if all ok make an offer. Ask who repaired it as well. When you come to sell a few years down the line the next buyer will be expecting a big drop in price as well.

Now you mention it.. does looka little high, doesn't it..

Do you not think that could be new parts that haven't settled yet and done 42K?

Could be, but I don't remember mine ever riding that high when new...

As has been suggested, an engineer's assessment prior to a purchase could yield a bargain...

Looks like the normal VRS springs to me.

If you are still considering this car make sure its not written off as a flood damage victim as water can get into the electrics and usually are never completely cured, as for accident damage when you test drive check it drives straight stops straight on a level road, actually a lot off VAG cars will wander into the left hand side a bit so don't worry too much on that score. Check panel gaps are even as that shows up any misalignment of the chassis. Another check i used to do was take the proposed car for an MOT and that would show up other maladies but not the garage the vendor uses. It's a bit more difficult to do this now as you have to book the car in for MOT's however it can still be done on short notice.

that was up for sale last year when i bought mine, im pretty sure i recognise the pics, so either its been sat for ages cos it wont sell, or the new seller has used the old pics, im not 100% as it was Nov last year but they do look very very familiar

IMHO something not right about this at all. Usually when a price is too good to be true then the car is also the same. Like most people have said the rear seems to be sat awfully high compared to the front.

Also V-Car is when a car has been Cat C'd not Cat D'd (i.e. written off) so again something is not right here. The check you have done is saying Cat D but the vendor is saying V-Car which means the car has gone through the inspection it needs to come back from a write off.

If you are intent on going to look at this motor then ensure you ask for all paperwork for V-Car etc.. and check to see what the reason for this was. Make sure you get it checked by a mechanic/AA as well as driving it yourself and going with your gut instinct on the feel/drive of the car.

Remember that all this will come up whenever you decide to sell the car and you will struggle to explain things to prospective buyers and find it hard to sell.

If you do buy it make sure it is for a real bargain price as you will will have to sell it cheap yourself in a few years and you also may need to spend a small fortune in repairs depending on any problems that surface in the near future (due to the multiple insurance losses). There is NO come back on a private sale by law as it is always buyer beware!!!
