EPC Light, Holidays Should I Worry?

Featured Replies

For some reason I seem to be barred from posting on the Technical thread so I will ask my question here. (please note administrator)

2003 1.4 Octavia

Yesterday my EPC light came on for the first time. I pulled in, switched the engine off and when I re-started it had cleared, so far it has not come on again.

I am worried because I live in Ireland and I am about to do a lot of miles in the UK in a few days time with a long drive to the ferry at this end.

The question is, should I worry about it? will it cause problems when I am on a journey?

Looks like the car dose not want this journet

The Ask a Tech forum is for Freedom members only - which is why you can't post there. Hopefully someone will offer advice here on the EPC light shortly. :)

Thanks for your help, but at this stage I am not wanting to know the cause, just I am likely to brake down on holiday? It only came on once.

The local dealer is caught for time, he only has one mechanic, the other is sick.

Mine came on about 2 weeks ago, accelerating down the M-way slip road at Bristol. First time in 4 yrs of ownership.

I pulled off the M-way, checked with my code reader & it was 'bank one too rich' or similar. I cleared the codes, restarted & drove the 120 miles to Plymouth without a problem. The CEL hasn't come on since.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you want peace of mind get someone to do a code scan for you (dealer or maybe someone from this list could help you, or get one of these & check it yourself.

Fingers crossed you have a good holiday; weather here at the mo' is worse than your standard Irish stuff! :D

I wouldn't worry about it. Mine came on for a few days, then went off, then stayed on permanently for 10 days. Then it vanished, and that was about a year ago.

Never went into limp-home mode as some cars do. Didn't want to be turned over by the dealer so i kept going with it....never a problem since.

As a matter of interest briskodians, I also own a 1.4 Octi - Massive seller in Ireland (they even did a 1.4 elegance!) The brain dead government of this once great state had previously based road tax on cubic capacity (Co2 since July '08). I pay 330 euro a year and my mate pays 630 on his 1.9 TDI. Rant over. Good night!

The Express.

my advice would be to make sure you have a breakdown/recovery cover just in case! but make sure it covers you for the UK, i have family in ireland (kinsale & ballinhassig) & i had to upgrade my UK AA cover so i would of been covered if i broke down in Ireland.Hope you enjoy the UK as much as i like Ireland!

As others, it's sort of impossible to say for sure.

If you have a laptop, take that with you, and come on here to get a garage recommendation when/if you get more or less stuck.

Thanks all. I had the local Skoda dealer do a check and he cannot see anything wrong. However there is some contradiction what the mechanic said and what some comments made on Briskoda. He said the EPC has nothing to do with temperature or speed sensor, these will bring on the ECU warning.

He though it could possible have been the ABS or slip from the wheels.

My Aviva insurance covers me for breakdown in Ireland and UK. Weather is good for this week-end.

As you say "The Express" car tax is now based on Co2 emission on new cars, I do not know how it works cannot afford a new car.
