do you have to take the door card off to replace them, or does the grille section seperate ?

you have to take the door card off. The speaker , and housing are held to the metal carrier panel (which the wiper motor etc are also fixed to) with 4 large pop rivets. You can use nuts and bolts to refix a different speaker. Every aftermarket speaker needs a spacer ,made of MDF, or purpose built plastic one to bring the speaker front behind the door card.The distance tapers slightly and is about 40 mm.
