Have I gone nuts ?

Featured Replies

Picked up my new Octavia yesterday and I've just noticed that the wheel bolts are just plain black non-locking ones. The model is an Elegance with 16" Crateris Alloy wheels. There is a socket in the toolkit which looks like it's for a locking wheelbolt and I was expecting Chrome bolts anyway as that's what they appear to be in the brochure.

Has anyone else got the same wheels or a FL Octavia with alloy wheels ? if so what are your wheelbolts like ?

it's not just that there are caps on the bolts is it?

They don't look like caps they look and feel like metal and they don't appear to pull of (by hand anyway, I've not tried any tools to lever them off) Here's a photo :

main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=82613&g2_serialNumber=2

That's what mine look like on my FL. Caps IIRC and they pull off.

Yes they are caps, there should be a tool to remove them.

They're caps, my Golf had these when I picked it up.

There is a tool to remove them stored next to the locking wheel nut key in the toolkit inside the spare wheel.

Its like a little black plastic U shape lever.

The one at 8 o'clock is the locking one, you can see that behind the hex "head" it is larger and rounder than the others.

One my mk1 octavia I can pull then caps off with my fingers.

Thanks for the replies everyone , what does the tool look like ?

(To be honest I've not looked in the actual handbook supplied yet but the online version, whilst having a page on 'wheel bolts', just mentions to use the correct match for the type of wheel, I couldn't see anything about caps or locking ones or removing them when you need to change a wheel)

The heads of the bolts in the brochure appear to be chrome but it's not a very big picture and they may be a different spec now.

Thanks Silver , (I posted the above post before I saw yours) I think I've seen the tool you refer to. I'll check tomorrow when it's light.

Thanks to the others that have also replied.

you may not want to do this but..

Get a screwdriver and put the end behind the head of the cap and lever it off against the wheel. Of course you have very shiny new wheels and may not want to take a screwdriver anywhere near them.

I think the proper tool is a sort of U shape with lugs on the end which locate on the cap and is 2-3 inches long.

Proper tool:

Thanks Devonutopia , I'll check tomorrow if I have one, I'm sure I've seen something like it in the toolkit.

And thanks to trundlenut too but I think I'll pass on the screwdriver suggestion :D

well.. notice very same thing on my august 2009 octavia.. dealer told me they are not using security bolt anymore.. you should be able to remove the weel without it..

I use long nose pliers to remove the caps.Thats probally why i need to order a new set now :o

I've yet to remove the caps to check but there is a special socket in the tookit which looks like it's designed to fit an anti-theft bolt.

Presumably the special tool to remove the caps is not easy to replace if you've had to resort to pliars

Proper tool

yes - I saw that socket.. went to the dealer. asked him question... answer was that security bolt is not necessary anymore.. or I'm being fooled :)
