Whats the advantage of MDI please ?

Featured Replies

Hi

Could anyone be kind enough to tell me please what the benefit/extra functionality is you get with the £150 MDI optional extra over and above what you get with the aux socket in the jumbo box for playing ipod music. Any one got the MDI - worth the extra ?

many thanks in advance, and sorry sure the answer is already on this site but put MDI in search and came up with no matches??

You get full control of whatever it is you plug in from the headunit, with full access to playlists, artists and tracks, unlike the aux in where you need to use your ipod or whatever you have plugged in to change tracks.

You can also plug in standard laptop type external USB drives and access the music stored on those directly on the headunit, this also includes USB flash drives etc.

Thanks Mannyo,

One other quick question - does the ipod charge when plugged into either the jumbo aux or MDI or is a seperate charger required?

One thing to point out is Protected AAC files, e.g. bought form the itunes store will not play! So if you have bought a lot.... back to 3.5mm cable!

James.

Protected files should play, it's just they need to be on the device that Itunes knows or is the "authorised" device, namely the Ipod.

The MDI is only there to provide the interface between the Ipod & the cars sound system.

Also the track details are displayed on the head unit and Maxidot displays, which is nice.

That is nice.

Is it expensive to retro-fit ?

Not expensive no, and a fellow member has a retrofit kit for sale on the forum.

Hi

Can I ask where you can get one of these retro fit kits and would my local skoda dealer fit it or would I take it elsewhere?

Thanks

Chough

You can buy it from any VW/Seat/Skoda dealer, they'll fit it or you can fit it yourself in about an hour.

Sure they will. We have zero problems playing those with our iPod connected to the MDI. Everything works as it should.

Best option I ordered! love having the control of the ipod on the screen..dont think I will ever be able to go back to an aux socket

Will one of these hook up to a 2006 Audience head unit ?? ( I have Maxidot)

and while we're asking, how about a non-MP3 stream HU fitted to a late 2006 Octavia?

Don't know if this is still the case or not, but worth pointing out as I was told by the dealer that if you get the MDI option, you can't use the 6 disk multi changer in the boot any more.

Also you can charge an ipod from the cigar lighter socket near the jumbo box with the correct adaptor at the same time as outputting to the 3.5mm aux jack.

However using the 3.5mm jack on its own does not charge the ipod.

No.

thankfully not a problem on the FL as the bolero simple has a media button which you select cd,sdcard or mdi from on the screen..autochanger in the dash now as well...but I have not even loaded a cd yet thanks to the ipod

I'm guessing the bolero could run mp3's from the cd as well so you could go mad with the amount of music you could be carrying in the car!
